Wonderful Scene at Newport When 500 Pounds
of Powder Excloded In the Bay.
A writer describing tho scone at Now
port last week, when tho government

A huge column of water, apparently
100 feet indinmotor, solid and unbroken,
rolled up like deneo smoko from n burn
ing building to n height in tho air of
about 300 feet. Aftor reaching its liolgth
It stood apparently for n half a minute,

began to descend. Tho sight was grand
beyond description.
In tho evening tho spectnelo was ro
pcated. In tho latter instance, tho sun
was shining in tho west as tho lingo
column of water broko for its descent
from its enormous height and tho out
side spray tinged with myrind colors,
made a dazzling spectnelo.
In each InBtanro tho report wns llko a
hugo cannon fired in tho distance In
each blnst 500 pounds of powdor wns
used. Tho powdor was plncod into po
sition at the b.tso of tho rocks by Fritz
Dcrock, n professional diver. Arrayed
in a diving suit that weighed 200 pouuds
ho deccuded from tho tug Gonoral
Wright, drawing after him with ropes
tho powder required for the blast. When

distance of sovoral hundred yards, and
