overcomo commenced on a Sat
urday evening, Bftor an oxcosslvoly
hot day when an unusual volumo of wa
ter had been used throughout tho city
for irrigating purposes and both 'pumps
were worked to their full capacity. Tho
low stago oi tho river had lowered the
pressure from tho outsldo which forces
tho water through tho gravel Into tho
crib, and on tho day in rjucstiorTthe wa
ter in tho crib was lowered to tho point
whoro tho sucthn created swirls and the
pipe bogau to suck air. This air collect
ed In the largo water pipo which was so
lightened that it floated to the surfaco of
tho water.
As soon as thoso conditions developed
tho wholo forco of water company om
ploycs was put to work at remedial
measures. Tho pumping was checked
temporarily ; tho air was drawn out of
tho pipe which then Bank to its proper
bod ; and early Sunday forenoon tho en
tiro plant was again in good working
order.
Tho disturbance of tho pipo, howover,
nnd tho churning caused by tho air, stir
red up all tho sediment which had col
lected on the bottom of the long lino of
pipo from tho crib to tho pump. This
was unavoidably pumped Into tho mains
Sunday morning and gavo riso to all
eoita notions amorig tho consumers.
In order to understand how tho com
pany proposes to guard againgt such
troublo In future it must bo stated that
tho 24 inch pipe enters tho crib some 12
or 14 feet from tho bottom of tho same.
An elbow turnod downward seven fecet
in length will now bo put on tho end of
tho pipo inside the crib. This will have
exactly tho enmo effect as raising tho
levol of tho river that much, as tho low
er tho water is drawn in tho crib, tho
greater becomes tho "hoad"which forcos
water in through tho Altering gravel.
It nlBo gives a resorve supply of a body
of water 20 x GO fcot and 7 foot deep,
abovo tho present availablo reserve in
tho crib. That however will cut little
figure in comparison with ho increased
inflow which results from tho lowering
of tho Burfaco of tho water in tho crib.
In tho mean tlino, a doublo row of pil
ing has been driven along tho pipo from
tho crib to tho pumping Btation nnd it
has been securely fastened in place.
Thoso are tho improvements under
way and thoy will prevent nuy further
troublo and Insure oven hotter water in
tho future.

Mr. Patrick is a native of Now Yor k,
born July 28, 1S2S.
Mrs. Patrick was born in Ohio, No-
ber 27, 1831, comiug to Mlchlguu when
but 0 years of age.
They are of Scotch-Irish descent. Mr.
and Mrs. Patrick were married in Mich
igan, where they made their homo until
1831, when thoy removed to Oregon,
a Mr, Patrick served two years in the
Fourteenth Michigan Battery during tho
Civil war and Mrs. Patrick had four
brothers in the Union army, one of
whom was killed during one of.Morgan's
raids. Of a largo family of children, six
are still livhig, vix:
