the Chinese dispatchos become familiar
enough when translated, thus: Tung
mean cast; el, west: nan, south; poi,
north; while tain, kin, or king stands
for capital or metropolis, as in Poking
(northorn capital) and Nankin (southern
foapital.) Tlon means heaven, soTion.
'In signifies heavenly metropolis. Ho
oTkiang means river, so Pei-ho is north
rlvor; Sl-klang, west river. Chonioans
seven, so Che-kiang is seven rivers. Shan
is mountain, and Shan-tung, east moun
tain, and Shah-si, west mountain. Pnl
is white, and Pla-shan, whlto mountain.
Ilni is sea, and kwan stands for gato, so
Hai-kwan, tho niaratimo customs, is
gate of the sea, and Shan-hal-kwan,
mountain and sea gate. Bhang is a city,
and Shang-hai, city by tho soa, Hoang
if yellow; Hoang-Ito, Yellow rlvor, and
Holng-Hal, Yellow sen. Yang means
ocean, and Tso, son; hence, tho Yang
tao river la sou of tho ocean, aud Tien
tse, son of heaven, tho omperor. Ku or
kow la a mouth or pasa, and Ta, big or
great, so Ta-ku moans big mouth, of Pol
Ho, while Nan-kow standa for south
paia (from Mongolia). Hu is a lake:
ling, a hill; hslang, a virago; listen, a
tax district. Fa is a porfecture: tal, a
governer: too n circuit or group of ad.

pure- (China). Ta Mei-Ka is tho name
appliod by tho Chinese to the United

aro fighting and killing each other."
Tho second telegram Is from Li Klu
Yi, viceroy of Nanking, dated today. It
says:
"According to an cdiclt of the 22nd
this moon, (July 18), all the ministers,
for whom strenuous efforts are being
made for protection, aro unharmed."
