Up In the Mountain.
Up at the Brletenbush Dot Springs
the people gathered there for at outing,
about fifty In number, with some 0! the
forest ranirors, had a grand Fourth of
July celebration, consisting of singing of
patriotic eongs, by Mrs. McDurney, of
Detroit, and Borne ladles from Hennls
Prairie opposite Gates and others. Hon.
Geo. S. Downing was tho orator of tho
day. Ho gavo an interesting account of
tho celebration of theCentonnlal tourtli
at Philadelphia In 1770 and of tho relics
gathered thoro, nnd made an impromptu
address appropriate to the occasion.
Tho display of fireworks ended a cele
bration which showed that tho few in
numbers were all Americans.

Salem Boys Too Speedy.
Tho Portland cyclists who came up
Sunday were somewhat disappointed at
the results of the races, as they had it
pretty well figured out that they wero
going homo with all tho honors. But
thoy figured very badly when they
went up against our Salem ridere. Out
of four races falem's speedy riders
Batty and Stanton captured three, llrst
and four seconds, leaving about fourteen
Portland ridors one first.
Tho races wero as follows : ,

Chan. Stanton, second Ituby Patty.
2-mllu handicap, won hy Carl Batty,
