Tho Captain did not seem to care how
soon or how lato we arrived. We left a
number of steamers at Dutch Harbor,
which came In hero, were unloaded and
left nealn before wo arrived, and it made
us sick. We want no more of tho"Notno
City." The weather,however.afUir leav
ing Dutch Harbor was delightful the re
mainder of tho trip,
Nome Is greatly overdone, The beach
has been worked over two or three times
already, and there is nothing loft for
anybody.
I find the beach diggings never have
been half as rich as represented, but thoro
aro plenty of rich claims up tho creeks.
Everything Is in such mad confusion.
Thoro will bo nuite a number of Salem
pooplo go back in tho noxt two or three
weeks.
Tho beach digging giving out, has dis
appointed thousands of pooplo.
I believe this is tho hottest camp over
known. There has bcon three or four
men shotbinco I landed. Eomonre going
crazy through disappointment, others aro
broke and cannot go back. Many hun
dreds aro going bock disgusted.
Peoplo Jump property and claims, it

hero. Everything is very high, lumber

The total amount of subscriptions se
cured by tho committe recontly appoint
ed by the chamber of commerce to
raise funds for encampment, is $510.
Of this amount nearly all has been
collected, W. A. Moores having boon ap
pointed for that duty.
An abundance of straw, lumber, wood
and water has been provfded for, as
well as lights, and the camp will have
"all tho comforts of a homo,"
Salem is fortunate in securing this en
campment which will bo tho greatest
yet held. It will draw thousands of
visitors from all over the atato to UiIb
city. Elaborate preparations are being
made by tlio hotels, restaurants nnd
boarding housos, for tho proper accomo
dation of tho expected crowds and vis
itors will havo no reason to complain of
tholr treatment.
On Sunday next, the second day of
tlio encampmont, tho popular excursion
of tho Foresters of America will bring
at least 3000 people to Salem, to visit
tho camp of tho O. N. G and on out
door entertainment will also tako
placo at tho jalr grounds.
The encampment will contlnuo eight
days and should bo visited by every one
who can possibly avail himself of the op

outlying towns which wero celebrating

sion down tho river. Still others had

way to tho weeping skies from the
young people who had been indulging In
such bright anticipations of n day's out

accident. A Chinese bomb, tired by a
small boy on Commercial street, tluew

and 10 days, of complications arising
from la grippe, after an illness of 8
weeus.
Deceased was a native of Bedford
county, Virginia. She was married in
that state to Rev. Caleb Chanman. nml
they crossed tho plains in 1818, and set
tled three miles east of Salem. In 1803.
the family moved to Salem. Hero Rnv.
Chapman, who wns a minister of the
Christian church, died eight years ago,
alter a service in tlio ministry for fifty
three years.
Deceased waa a member of tho Chris
tian church nearly all her life, and died
iu that faith. She leaves two sons, Calob
Chapman, of Waitsburg, Washington,
and John A. Chapman, of Middleton,
Oregon, and two daughters, Mrs. Hattlo
M. Jackson and Mrs. Sadie McFaddon,
both of this city.
Tho funeral will be held from the Firat
Christien church, tomorrow. fFrldavi
afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. J. Evans,
officiating. Interment will bo in Rural
cemetery,
