The Odd Fellows laid tho corner stone
of their new building Wednesday in the
prceonco of probably five hundred peo
ple, and witli the ceremonies usual to
such occasions, besides an exceptionally
fino program.
Shortly after two o'clock the proces
sion formed on Stato street in front of
tho Holman building, where the Odd
Follow a nnd Kebekalia now have their
headquarters.
Clicmokota Lodgo No. 1 and Olivo
Ixlgo No. 18 wore each represented by
nearly fifty membora, and Balem Re
bckah Lodgo by over a scora of ladies.

hand, to Commercial street, then north
to Court and cast on Court to the site of

of Professor Francesco Bceloy opened
tlio oxercisea with music, followed by
'tho opening remarks and a prayer by
the grand chaplain, A. O. Condit.

caslon by Mrs. L. It. Osborne nnd set to
music by Prof. 'A. M. I'arvin.
The actual work of laying tho corner
stonocamonoxt and consumed sfime three
quarters of an hour. The real procrss
was witnessed by but very few, as the
crowd pressed in closely around tlio
Btono and derrick, and only tho inner
circle could see what was going on. Tlio
stone, however, was laid witli mathe
matical oxactneea, and with the appro
priate ceiumonles. In a cavity 12x12x3
Indies wore placed a variety of articles
calculated to orouso mora or less Inter
est on the part of tho future antiquar

aprinkled. If tho weeds could be re
moved from the gutters, tlio street car
track, nnd tho spaces in front of privato
lota, tho whole streot would present tho
appearance of a beautiful avenuo more
nearly than it now doca. A plan is to
bo adopted covering all theao points and
co-operatfon asked for.
Wheu tho loose rock ia removed and
tho street aprinkled any Balem atrcet ia
a rood driving atrcet. With tho addi
tion of fino gravel it becomes a perfect
speedway. Recorder Judah is hard at
work with city officials to try to flguro
out a plan of co-operation that will mako
it possible to convert any one of our
streets Into a smooth sprinkled driveway.
Hy co-operation tlio expense can bo
mado very light. For instanco if the
property fronting on Twelfth and Stato
that ia benefitted by removing all dust
for the summer boro its share of the
exponso, tho state, city and county
would beat fully three-fourths of the
burden. Privato property would get all
tho benefit and would pay only one
fourth tho cost.
Of course, thcro aro property owners
who are unable to pay. Tlioro aro
othora who are unwilling to pay any
thing towards any enterprise of this
kind. Rut this class must not stand in
tlio way of a great municipal benefit,
such as a good driving street would con
fer on tho community.
