Kditob JocnsALt Strango, isn't it,
that every fow uceks an anti-trust

while at the samotime nnd at all times,
right at homo wo toleralo and foster tho
I vilest and most baso monopolies, such
J as taking from nien.and women their
natural right of choosing whom thoy
. prefer to aid them in their efforts to ro
storo lost vitality, and resuscitate tho
; physical organism for tho indwelling of
(gooJly feelings nnd happiness.
Wo liavo especially in mind now tho
I proceedings nt Oregon City, wherein
Mrs. Quint and A. V. Hertzku were
tho victims avenged.
if Mrs. Quint preferred to bo treated
by a Christian Scientist to eneo her
pain and to allovlato suffering, what
right had any persons, court or jury to
interfere and dictate otherwise I Is it
possible that tiny 0110 besides Mrs.
Quint could have a better understanding
of her wants and desires than Mrs.
Quint hersoli? And slio having excr-eisi-d
her right of choice, as to who alio
wanted to treat hor, and called in a
Christian Scientist, what right has soci
ety to prosecuto A, W. llortzko for com
plying with tho sick woman's request?
But since monopoly law assumes tho
right to dictate by whom wo maybe
treated when feeling out of harmony
with the constituent elements of the
physical form, It would seem fair and
mora consistent that society which Is
rcsiKinslb'o for tho monopoly law
should pay tho bill for tho "Licensed-to-Klll"

I am not 11 Christian Sc.entst, and do
not wrlto tills in behalf of that eocallol

equality, and monopoly-ridden human
ity. How many of the Licenscd-to-Kill
scientists would bo outaltlo of prison
wulls if nil wero convicted for man
slaughter who have hnd patients die
under tholr treatment.
If Christian Scientists ought lo bo
locked behind prison bars for having or
letting patients die, ought not tho same
rulo apply to tho licensed medlral so

What say you voters and law makets,
Tho same pnper in which I niw tho

but 110 item on r r rests of any 0110 for
letting a patient die, or for manslaught

doctor them, And prob.ihly all flvo had.
And if bo why did not tho pup -r contain
an item of live arrests and bind overs to

I can see no good reason why thee

A PROMINENT MOTHEIt
Writes About the Way Children Aro
Crowded in the Public Schools.
Ed. Jeun.vAL: I seo that you urge
mothers to express themselves in regard
to the management of our public
schools.
Asono mother 1 want to state some
facts In regard to a wrong Inflicted on
the patrons of our schools', by some
perhaps all of tbo teachers In tho mid
dle grades.
Tho mother expects to spend from
hall an hour to a full hour every morn
ing, getting her little folka ready for
achool, that they may leave homo clean,
cheerful and happy, with a mother's
kiss on tholr lips.
Lunch, of course is more or less hur--ried.
When they return nt night each 0110
has 0110 or more school books, and upon
Iwlng asked about them, replies "Oh
tho teacher said all our class must tako
their books homo and study tonight."
If sho asks, "did thoy not study well
in school" "yes, but there was not
time," and yet, later sho will hear them
alluding to the story tho teacher read
aloud to them during school hours tak
ing half an hour I
Sho thinks, but says nothing.
Aftor being confined so long they
must bo allowed tho time until daik for
play and exercise, but after dinner is
ovor tho weary mother must spend two
hours or moro, hearing lessons, or moro
often aiding first ono and then another
in solving problems In their Ari hmctlc,
which requires her to learn rules nearly
forgotten, and exercise all her reasoning
powers, with perhaps tho baby crying,
or other little ones clamoring for needed
attention.
Somotimcs the father homo ftotn
business cares, hoping (or sweet rest, Is
Impressed into tho service, but with
him often "patience soon ceases to bo a
virtue," and ho agrees with the mother
in wondering what teachors are for, or
if their children aro moro stupid than
other people's.
Tho children are tent to their rest
moro or less relloved of their burdons,
but at tho cost of worried parents.
Fortunately these homo studies do not
occur daily, or there would bo a robelllon
against such 11 forcing process, but thoy
do tako placo very frequently, in fact
almost daily for two or thrco weeks be
foro every examination, and parents
olten sympathize in relating tholr ex
periences to each othor, and wonder If
thero Is no remedy.
It may not be the teachors fault, for
doubtless we havo many good teachers,
it may bo tho fault of our system o'
education but many parents do bellevo
that either tholr children aro not studl
us In school hours, and if nut, parents
hbuld bo consulted, or too much Is re
quired of our children in the middle
grades. O.nk Motiieu
