Better Turn Their Attention
to the Latter.
A few years ago, when wheat In the
Willamette valley was worth $1 per.
bushel, it was probably the most profit
able crop to be raised; but now that
wheat laud In some sections inns.w ,.-.
bo large a crop as In former years, and
the price is olten less than SOcents a
bushel, the farmers of Oregon must
adapt themselves to the changeu conui

Years ago, when tho bulk of tho wheat
produml In tho United Stales was
grown In or near the states of Now
York and Ohio, and when it is wortli
near $1.50 per pushel, it was a profitable
crop for the farmers in those eastern
states. Hut as tho railroads uoro built
west, and tho great prairie, with Its
uowor and richer lands wafl brought
into cultivation, wheat wus grown In
larger quantities and at a price that
made wheat-growing unprofitable in tho
older states whero the land had beconio
poor from years of continual cropping.
Thcso changed conditions Induced
farmers to engage lorgelyin dairying.
First cliecso factories and thou cream
eries were erected, and tho llnest herds
of cows were kept. In a few years the
Iinrnvcrlshed farms were riclt in soil,
I and growing largo crops of clover and
j corn to fill silos and provldo green food
for tho cows during tho long winters

state gilt edgo yellow' butter and the
richest of cheese becamo in demand, and
millions of dollars' worth havo been ex
ported to other countries.
Fanners who aro competent to Judgo
claim that tho Willamette valley is ono
of tho best dairying sections in tho coun
try; yet thcro is hardly a cheeso factory
or creamery within reach of Salem, nml
much of the butter nnd cheeso we cat is
brought hero from other counties, and
occasionally from other states.
There Is, however, ono cheese maker
in this vicinity, but ho finds it dlfllcult
to obtain as much milk as he would Hko
to use. This is Mr. rkhublngor whose
factory Is situated on tho Asylum Farm
road three miles .from Salem. Ho has
had largo experience In Germany as
well as in this country, and ho uees all
tho milk he can buy In making fancy
cheeso for the market. Mr. Schublnger
Is tinablo to supply tho demand for his
cheeso, as ho can only secure tho milk
from thirty cow?, while he is prepared
to buy all that threo hundred or more
could produce. Ho pays as much for
milk as do the cheeso factories In past
ern states wliero the cost of production
is much greater than here, and will go
alter the milk, thus saving the furmor
tho expense of delivery.
Some idea of tho amount of milk to
bo obtained from n good cow may bo
gathered from the following recerd: At
tho lato Agricultural show held at l.on
don Canada tho dairy cow that won
first prlzo wns a Holstotn 0 years old,
and was milked each day of tho fair.
Tho first day she gave 74 pounds, tho
recond day 72 'pounds, tho product of
tho first two mllklnga tested 4,5 per cent
ot butter fat, the product ot the next
milking tested 4.8 and tho last milking
4.3 per cent butter fut. This Cow's pre
vious unofllcial record credits her with
her WBth 14,000 pounds of milk in ten
mouths.
This matter Is well wortli tho serious
consideration ot tho Willamette Valley
farmor. If a good cow will produce In
a year four tons ot milk that wilt sell for
$80, ten such cows would yield the
ownor $800, a sum sutllcicnt to make
him independent ot tho prlco ot wheat,
and the crop will grow each year. Tho
Htnall farm well worked will grow
enough clover, corn and other food to
sustain it small herd ot cows, nnd thcso
will produco an income sufllclent to
mnko u prosperous uud happy homo.

shop became frightened and ran away,
upsetting the cart and tearing things up

Mr. West's son, Roy, and was passing
tho Yew Park school. Somo boys wero

and when tho horso came upon
