Total lovy
This leaves Marion county's
county purposes 10.4 mills against
Linus 2.85 mills. Ours Is nearly four
times as high as theirs.
This Is a condition which scents to
call for explanation.
Linn county has been for years out of
tho hands ol tho Republican machine,
but hor business lias been conducted by
representative men of nil parties, yot
Linn is out of debt while Marion Is f75,
000 behind, and their tax lovy is only
ono-fourth as high as ours.
It Is cry confusing
The claim Is made, mid, there is un
doubtedly truth In It, thut Llmt's ex
penses are not so heavy for bridges us
ours; that tlio prison and asylum have
tendency to give us more thaii our share
of paupers, by attracting the indigent
relatives of persons coulluod therein ;
that our criminal oxponsca are heavier,
though why that should be so does not
appear.
llut all that would not uccottnt foru
difference of nearly four to one. Another
plea Is that interest on our debt absorbs
u neat sum ot money. That excuse.
tonda to the benefit of present county
ofllciuls, hut not of the management
which caused thut dobt to be accumu
lated. This is not a matter of partisan imll
tics but of common horsu sense.
As long as county olllccra urn elected
or defeated on national Issues with
which their duties havo nothing what
over tu do, tlio taxpayers will surely
havo to sweat (or It Thoyoughtto; mid
they will show poor taste in miueullng.
Lei them use common business setose,
as they would In their own affalm. The
huslnoss tuati who would hire an iuofll
clout clerk bocauiio ho was a Republican
or Democrat or Populist, would soon
havo no occasion to hiro clerks; he
would bo be looking for a job himwlf.
Tho example of the city of Salem in
puttiug a business udminlstratlon in

nuiuborloss people to thinking and talk

"Weasels mid ferrets," said a pro
fessional rat catcher, "are about the
inmo thing. Tho imported ferrets
trained to tho business are larger than
the weasel, that Is all. After 1 am
through with rat catching I use my fer
rets to hunt rabbits out of brush piles,
bay and straw stacks, which is a prof
itable business when rabbits are
plenty. What you call rabbits over
here wo In England call hares.
"When a man onco starts lu ns a
professional tat catcher and gets to
understand training and working fer
rets, theto Is such tin attraction In the
trade that ho never willingly gives It
up. It's a profitable business without
too much competition."
"Do the ferrets over bite you 7"
"It's a very careless and awkward
man that gets bitten by a trained fer
ret. When one la bitten by nn enrag
ed ferret, the bllo Is of a very severo
character, oxtictrfely painful and stow
to heal."
As the rat catcher talked a O-month-old
ferret, his fiery little eyes gleam
ing lllto living gems, was crawling over
his lap and trying to get In under Ids
coat. "This fellow," said tho rat
catcher, "Is as gcntlu as a kitten and
likes to have his back rubbed and to
bo caressed as well as any cat you ever
saw. When tho ferret bites a rat's
neck, ho knows exactly what he Is do
ing, and his front teeth, cutting llko
razors, go right through tho Jugular.
"Of course we generally muzzlo them
when wo send them lu after rats, and
wo always muzzle them when wo send
them In after rabbits. If their teeth
wero ot liberty, they would kill tlio
first rnt or rabbit they met nnd would
remain In tho hole sucking Its blood.
When wo put n ferret into n house aft
er rats, wo stop up all tho holes at tho
outsldo of tlio houso except ono or two.
Over these we place bags, and the fer
rets, driving, the game before them,
run the rats Into tlio bags. We keep
tho ferret without his .ordinary meals
beforo using blra, nnd this makes him
kecuer In his chase.
"It's mighty easy to spoil n ferret
After a young ferret has been badly
bitten by n rnt, as sometimes happens,
you cau't get him to go Into n liolo

grown and has tlio skill and courage
that ho should havo ho Is a holy terror

tlmo kill every one of them, lints nro

but no other nnlmnl of the snme size
has us much courage as n ferret or

"In 'Dugland tho largest ferrets aio

Is supposed to be an abbreviation of
Polish cat, and tho nnlmnl abounds
all over Europe. The mini: Is much

nud many depredations that are at
tributed to the weasel are committed
by the mink. All these animals prowl

miles In search of food, uvea coming
Into towns and the submits of cities."
Audubon, who was n close student
of nature, was delighted with tho
weasel, or American ferret. Its long,
flexible body, Its extraordinary length
of neck, the closeness of Its fur, Its
keenness of scent, Its wonderful nglll
ly nud quickness of movement, all ex
cited his admiration,
An American writer sins: "Tlio coin
uiou weasel has sometimes been
caught and carried otf by large hawks
ami owls. Soiry was tlio experience
of the captor In such cases Me has
caught it Tin tar. The capthe will bite
Into the sides of the enemy, so that
both will fall to the ground, the bird
mortally wounded and tlio weasel usu
ally comparatively unhurt.
Tlio weasel's courage lu defending It
keif when attacked by birds of ptey is
universally admitted, nor Is It deficient
tu fierce opposition to dogs and even
men when Its nest Is Invaded by ei
ther. It usually kills for food, biting
through the head Into the Drain with
such oxportucss that Its victim can
scarcely utter a cry of pain. It usually
eats tho brain first; then tlio rest or

their runs or holes, A weasel's
proximity to u poultry yard Is not to
bo desired, Hut lu barns, hayricks
nud grain stacks It Is decidedly ad

Tho weasel's characteristics mo not

that n weasel will watch a ben on the
nest for an hour, waiting for a freshly

annoyance at losing Its liberty than to

because I havo over and over again

Upon one occuslou three of us boys
