abandoned the hope of re-capturlng the

anxiety has been removed from tho na

"General Warren's troops last night
occupied Splonkop, surprising tho small
garnton, who tied.
"It has beon held by us nil day,
though we woro heavily attacked es
pecially by a very nnnoylng aholl fire.
"I fear our casualties are considerable,
and I havo to Inform you, with regret,
that General Woodgato was dangerously
wounded.
"General Warren Is of the opinion
that he has rendered the enemy's po
sition untenable. The men nro
