Home inquiry having been made as to
tho now law In reforence to wide-tired
wagons, which Is now lu operation, we
publish the act in full, as follews:
''From and after tho lBtday of Janu
ary, A. 0. 1000, tho county court or
county board, of each county within this
stato.ls hereby authorized to make a ro
bato' cacli year, for four years, on the
road tax of each person within its 'coun
ty who shall own and have lu habitual
use On the highways of this state,
wagons or other vehicles for the trans
Krtat!on of freight and other heavy ar
ticles, tho tires of which aro not less
than three inches in width, of $1 for
each wheel of such vehicle ; and pro
vided, further, that the owner of each
vehicle having tiros four inches In
width, upon which there Is a difference
of at least eight inches in tho length of
the front and rear axlo, so constructed
that tho front and reai wheels will not
come in contact with the same road sur
face whilo the vehicle is moving in a
straight lino, shall recelvo, In addition
to the aforesaid rebate, a further rebate
for four yoars lit his or her road tax as
aforovald .of ('-' for each vehicle of this
class for each and every year during the
said period that said vehicle Is habitu
ally used upon the highway of this
state."
This is a good law. It does not ap
pear that many counties have taken
advantage of It as yet but it would boi

pieces, The objection that Is sometimes
brought against wide tires that they
pickup tho mud Is valid ; in some
places, but in very few; for with prop
erly constructed roads, well drained,
the universal tisoof wide tires would re
sult In tho road being kept smooth and
hard from tho constant rolling, and
there would be no mud to piok up.
Exhaustive experiments w ere olllchlly
made in one of the eastern states a year
or so ujo to test the comparative value
of thu wido and narrow tires. A machine
was used which showed the number of
pounds (Jrnft of the vehicle, and tests
were made under all circumstances.
On ground which was hard under
neath but ro soft on top from it thaw
that e von tho w Me tiro would sink to
the solid, the narrow tired wagons
drew the easier. Under all other cir
cumstances the difference was in favor
of the wide tires.
On a hard smooth road there was

As it was rumored that some of the
parties in question would rcfuro pay

with some of thorn ou tho subject.
One, David McCully, paid thu amount
charged against him, without delay, and
so far as heard from no one has refused.
Eugene P. McCornack against whom
the largest charge is mitdo for fumigat
ing the opera houso lodging house, said
that ho had not looked Into the mutter,
but was willing to d anything reason
able. So fur as ho had considered the
matter the charge off 10 for supervision
seemed somewhat out of projiortlon to
the remainder of tho hill, f 12.2ft for
material used mid labor. However, he
had no complaint to make against the
city council, that had done the best they
could.
A Hush ox pressed himself to substan
tially the same effect, mid E. 0. Pattou

Old Hill Anderson announced his
