A letter received from a young lady
about to graduate from one of tho nor
mal schools of the stato contained on
the first page these three inexcusable
blunders in tho use of tho Kngllsh lan
guage: "I would of written" "every
since' "malary forover,"
Tho writer of that letter is a young
lady something over 20 years of age, of
propossing appearance, and good Intelli
gence. After a fovv months moro of attend
ance at a normal school she will be
given .i certificate authorizing lior to
teach in any public school in thla stato,
and she will be turned loose upon a con
tiding public who have been led to be
lieve that the normal schools aro insti
tutions for tho training of teachers, and
that thir graduates must necessarily bo
fitted for tho work.
She will get a school. How much
practical training In the correct use of
tho language will her pupils receive?
What shall wo say of the institutions
which, professing to gruduato only
trained teachers, carry nu intelligent
pupil to within a few months of gradua
tion in such dense ignoranco? If they
do this in tho most essontial branch, is
there any reason to suppose that thoy
do any bettor in other branches?
Yet the Normal schools play a very
important part in tho educational ma
chinery of Oregon and draw a nice little
lump of tho state's nionoy. Is it to be
wondered at that President Strong tired
some pretty forcible language In urging
the necessity for improvement, in his
iddreau before the teachers' association.
Salem is far lvehiuil as the rest of
the state In this matter, perhaps far
thor. Tho city of Salem's bIzo, whose high
est grade in the public schools docs not
fit tho graduates to pass an examina
tion for tho lowest grade of a county cer
tificate without tho intervention of a
privato preparatory school, has no occa
sion to congratulate herself upon her
school system.
Tho people of our city should rise up
and demand a high school. To be sure
our schools aro bettering from year to
year, and wo have in the past few yours
had a Ninth grade added.' Hut ho

four years grow Into a full high school
