Damage to Concrete Pavements and Oar
dens Old Landmarks Disappear.
For sovornl years past there has been
n disposition to thin out tho beautiful
shade trees lining tho sidownlks in the
resldcnco portion of our city, but In tho
recollection of tho "oldest inhabitant"
there has never been such n wholesale
slaughter of trees as is now going on In
all partB of Salem. There are two rea
sons given for destroying the trees:
First, ns tho trees grows to largo pro
jwrtlons It puts forth imneiiFO roots
near the base, which aro very destruc
tive to concrete walks; second, the
smaller roots form n complete network
that spreads out in niadiusof from 30
to 50 feet, and absorbs tho plant-nutriment
of tho soil nnd the moisture fo
necessary to tho successful growth and
development of shrubs and (lowers.
While It seems a shame to cut down the
many loautlfiil maple tices that abound
throjghout tho city, yet when ono
thinks of the shrubs, grasses and llowera
that will adore the yards In places where
now it is impoislblo to grow oven n
respectable patch of salt-grass, wo nro of
the opinion that the axe has been used
in n good cause.

While on a tour in tho suburban por

pencil-pusher stopped In front of the
residenceof J. C. Baker who was w hacking
away at an enormous stump on tho
outer edge of his sidewalk as tho Hem
chaser came up, but stopped his work to
say "Howdy?"' "Taking out nil old
slump?" enquired the. reporter. "I
thought these three stumps" said Mr.
Baker, pointing to two others n short
distance from the one on which ho was
at work, "had been hero about long
enough, nnd concluded to take them
out. The trees wero planted by Lafay
ette Moore early in tho '00i, and wero
the first set out on what was then
known ns the Savage road. Tho trees
grew to Immense proortioiis, Injing 3 to
4 feet in diameter. They wero cut
down In 1805, nnd today I nm taking
out the old stumps "
On tho banks of Mill creek, in the lot
adjoining Mr. Baker's stands n relic of
Lafayette and John Moore's Old foundry
erected about 40 years ago. Part of tho
old building and some parts of tho
machinery yet remain to mark the sot
where tho foundry stood. In later years
the building was used ns a chair factory.
