LIQUID AIR. THE NEW REFnlO
ERATOn, Ono of tho most Important Inventions
of late years Ih tho procoHH of liquifying
air nt small cost.
Until nbout 20 yours ago, ecleutista al
ways supposed that nlr was a gaB that
It novor could ho anything but a gas.
Thoy had tried numberless experiments
with a view to ascertaining whother air
could bo reduced to tho form of a
liqud, but had not succeeded. Thoy had
placed it under a pressure of thousands
of pounds to tho equaro inch; thoy had
tried boating It in roverbatory furnaces
and cooling It to tho greatest known
dopth of chemical cold, but It remained
nlr a gas.
Hut In 1877 Raoul Tlckot, a French-
man, succeeded lu liquifying oxygen by
a combination of enormous pressuroand
Intonse cold. In 1802 Olzowskl, a Polo
of Warsaw, succeeded In doing tho same
with nitrogen, the other constituent of
air.
Then Trot, Jnmos Dowar of England
at length produced liquid air, tho first
ounco costing ovor $3000. Lator ho re
duced tho cost to 1500 por ounco, but
that was too costly to hoof practical use.
It has remained for an American, Clins.
E. Trlplor, of Now York City, to make
liquid air a commercial possibility.
Tho principle he works on is this:
That when a gas Is compressed, it parts
with heat, it might bo said tho heat is
squeezed out of it, and when tho pres
sure Ib removed tho gas in expanding
must get back from some sourco tho
heat It lost before, and it obsorbs this
heat from anything it comes in contact
with.
It Is tho same principle which Is util
ized in making artificial Ico.
1 Mr. Trlpler, first comprcssos his air
with a steam oiiglno putting it under a
pressure of 2500 pounds to the square
Inch. Then ho leads IL through pipes
to tho liquifying apparatus.
This is a largo up right tube, and In
sldo are two systems of pipes and colls.
In system number ono are openings
which allow tho compressed air to es
capo. Ah It escapes It expands; and as
it ox panda It extracts heat from tho air
in tho second system of pipes, with an
Irrcslstable pull, passing off afterward
at tho top of the largo tubo.
As this process Is continued tho air in
tho closed tulics gets colder, for tho ex
panding air from tho other tubes keeps
taking out heat. When tho temperature
of tho confined air gets down to 312
degrees bolow zoro it liquifies, oxuetly
as stoain liquifies when it cools, and tho
liquid air can bo drawn off at the bot
tom of tho machine.
That is the process, and all that is
requited Is tho power and a llttlo simple
machinery, as Indicated.
Once liquified tho air will remain so
ns long as It kept at a tompor
aturo no higher that 812 degrees below
zero. That is its limit, as 212 above zero
is tho limit for wator. Wator raised
above tho boiling point, becomes steam,
or gaseous; liquid nlr raised above 312
degrees bolow zero acts llko water at 212
degrees above and becomes ugaln gaseous.
Wheu liquid air Is exposed to the
temperature at which a man feels com
portable, say 70 above, it acts tho same
as wator at about 212 above; it ex
pands to a gas,
It takes about 800 cubic feet of air to
.niako one cubic foot of tho liquid, so it
has a tendency to expand to 800 times
its liquid volume. In doing this it will
run au engine exactly as steam will.
If left in an open veesnl it will sim
mer and boll away llko water on a hot
stove. Sotting such a vessel on a cako
of ice Is like 6otting a pan of water on
red hot stove.
A locomotive could Iks built to run
with liquid air and all there need to
hu of It would bo a tank and .the cylln
der
ordinary temperature would cause tho
liquid air to vaporize. Tho locomotive
tanks could bo filled with liquid air as
thoy are now filled with water, at cer
tain stations where plants could bo es
tablished to manufacture it. Whcro
water power is available along tho line
this would savo tho cost of fuel,
besides tho cost of hauling it
and tho boiler and flro box.
Many curious experiments are in ado
with liquid air. It freezes mercury or
alcohol solid In a few moments. It also
freezes other metals. Iron and steel be
come brlttlo as glass. A tin cup which
hos been filled with liquid air for a
few minutes, will, If dropped, shatter
Into a hundred llttlo fragments llko thin
glass.
A dollcato roso that would wither and
turn block from a frost blto, may bo im
mersed for a moment in liquid air with
out changing its color; but It Is frozen
so hard that tho petals are llko glass
and may bo broken In a thousand frag
ments. India rubber becomes brlttlo
and breaks Ilka earthen ware. Frozen
buttor may bo pounded In a mortar un
til It is a fine powder.
Lead becomes clastic. Ico becomes
milky llko camphor, and crumbles into
fragments. Ivory and some other
substances becomes momentarily
phosphorescent. Loathor is . ono
of tho fow substances that nsoui to
1)0 unaffected by tho low temperature.
A soft alloy, llko Bolder, shows no elas
ticity and llttlo strength at ordinary
tomporatures, but If it Is wound into a
spiral and bathed in liquid air, it acts
llko a watch spring and will support
flfteon times tho weight it did before.
When liquid air is left oxHicd tho
nitrogen pastes off lira leaving o-great-or
proportion of oxygen. Jis oxygon is
tho substance that supports combustion,
Home striking experiments are then
possible Woolon folt saturated will
explodo and burn llko gun'colton. Steel
Itself, if dipped into tho liquid, will
burn llko a pleco of greasy pork rind,
giving off a very brilliant light.
This proporty of liquid oxygen may
yot be utilized in the manufacture of
high explosives.
Somu of tho uses to which liquid air
may be put are tho following.
As a substltuto for compressed air.
Witli a pressure of 1000 pounds to tho
square Inch compressed nlr requires
very strong steel rescrvours. Hut tho
liquid, containing 11) times as much
air and potential energy may be carried
lu a paper lwx.
In aerial navigation. Power may bo
carried with very little weight.
In submarine navigation. Liquid air
after furnishing powor by expansion In
a motor would provide a supply of pure
air for breathing.
In deep bea diving. Tho diver can
take hla supply of puro air down with
him.
In Surgery, where cauterization is
necessary; it will cat out diseased flesh
quickly and Bafely.
It can bo used in hospitals for pure
cool air to tho patients. In fact, It can
bo used anywhere for cooling purposes,
and Jt will undoubtedly soon lw practic
able, for those who can afford It, to
order u gallon of liquid air sent up to
tho house as thoy would now order a
gallon of Ico cream.
A small dish of liquid air, teft open in
a room would keep it cool and at tho
same tlmo give off a supply of perfectly
pure fresh air.
Tho greatest drawback to handling or
transporting it Is that there is a constant
wastage and it must bo allowed a vent,
or it would explodo ami tear to pieces j
tho vessel containing it.
There is no doubt that liquid air will
soon be on tho market in all the larger
cities, as it la now in many, and.thero
seems no good reason why it should not
belcheaply produced wherever power is
avallablo, and meet a ready demand for
