Fonroillcers of tho Second Oregon
regiment are reported to have taken
examinations at General Shaftcr'a head
quarters, looking toward commissions
in tho now Thirty-fifth regiment. Their
names are: Captain E. 0. Worrick,
of company K: Captain A. F. Prescott,
company U; First Lieutenant E. P.
Crowne, regimental adjutant; First
Lieutenant A. J., Drazec, adjutant;
second battalion. The result of tho ex
aminations will not bo known for some
time.
The first three officers named took
tho oxamsnation for tho captaincy;
Lieutenant iiraxcco'fl was that of com
missioned ofllcer. Sinco only tlireo of

gon regiment, ono of these applicants
must bo disappointed. Lieutenants

fromTallulah, La,, says six Italians were
lynched there last night. The names
of those who were lynched were unob
tainable. Yestonlay Dr. Hodgos, a
prominent physician of Tatlulah, quar
relled with an Italian. Later in tho
day ho wounded tho physician with a
shot gun, A mob immediately sur
rounded the would-bo nnansain and live
friends, and strung them nil to trees
and filled their bodies with buckshot.

A Salem special says: Tho fitato
lioard of education held a meeting this
ufternoon, at which several important
rulcB were made. It was decided that
no certificate will bo granted under tho
provisions of the old law, even If the ap
plicant were entitled to one, when the
time for receiving It expired, May 20.
Graduates from normal schools and
chartered institutions aro excepted 'rotn

Tho board decided that primary cer
tificates are county certificates, should
bo Issued by county boards of examiners
that aro good in any county In tho state.
As tho law places no time limit on pri
mary certificates, thoy will bo issued
without tlmo limit. Applicants for pri
mary certificates will bo required to
nass examination 011 tho same ques
tions as applicants for first, second and
thlrd-grmlo certificates on reading, writ
ing, orthography and theory and prac
tice, and pasB further examination upon
tho art of questioning and methods.
It was also decided that certificates of
other states will bo honored here, nro-
vlded they are state paiiors, of like grade
ami secured ny state examination.
Superintendent Ackerman rojiortcd
that he had turned into the state treas
ury $088 received by him as fees for
state certificates mid diplomas. This
goes into tho stnto board of examiners'
fund, and makes a total of $1508 paid in

Iugersoll died at his homo at Dobbs
Ferry, N. Y., this afternoon ofapoploxy.
Iugersoll went to his Bumuicr homo
at Dobbs Ferry, two days ago appar
ently In good health. Shortly after his
arrival he complained of slight indisposi
tion.

to lilm, He laughed, and replied that
