All druimUtA Tho condition of tho hop crop In Or egon is considered ns good as can be ex pected at tliis time of tho year. All who are going to sprey their yards are either doing bo now or expect to do so immediately. Tho yards about Salem are as a rule looking thrifty and there isevery reason, with good weather, to look for a bigger veal (I than last year and the quality will all depend upon the vermin, blight or mildew. Tho following notes wero "gleand from an experienced hop grower who has just return nl from tho yards mentioned below. Tho Levy yard is in good condition. Hop vines look fine but tho stand is not full. W. II. Frances runs this farm, hop yard and all and his crops aro gen erally good. Tho Ed Croisan yard is also in good condition and is operated by Win. Ger man and tho stand is better than last year and comparatively free from lice. Tho Pettyjohn yard is being operated by Al Pettyjohn Jand the stand is very much better than it was llust year and has been well worked. The Ilolmesyardisoiic hundred acres, (K) of which he is working himself mid tho other 40 a Chinaman has. The Chinaman's yard is in line condition and no lice. Tho best piece of hops in tho vicinity of Salem Is that operated by a Chinaman on the Wilson place flvo miles east of town and the stand is perfect and ev erything considered ho will take the cream in tho hop business this year. It. L. Swartz has about 40 acres of hops upon which, three years ago he grew 15 tons, last year he harvested 1)000 lbs and his prosed this yettr looms up, barring all accidents, as if he would get about 12,000. At Wullerville, tho great hop center In New York State, tho following from tho Hoportcr will give a fair idea of con ditions; Transactions have been very few dur ing the past week. The sales wero made at prices that show that buyers aro obliged to bid a little more than formerly to secure what they want. There l still some apprehension con cerning tho growing crop and while tho vino seems to be doing fairly well and arming out, still there is not that vigor and growtli that farmers would like to seo. It is doing much bettor than two weeks nuo. Tho weather has been al most too cool of late for the best results. AN0THKU iir.roiiT. Advices from tho interior of New York regarding tho effectof recent storms upon tho growing crop wero variable, somo indicating that tho vino was injured, whilo others wero to tho effect that good, healthy growth was stimulated. Whatever tho outcome may be it was certain that buyers wero quite as indif ferent as they have- boon at any time of late, IkUi In purchases of 1898 crop goods and in contracting for hops of tho 1 1800 crop. Ilrewora aro buying moder ately at present, and secure at old prices what stock they may need. Somo deal its nro still seekiiiu orders for tho new- crop at 14 to 15c guaranteeing choice quality. Tho growth though recently very rapid Is also not quite ko satisfactory os it ought to Ikj.
