Ail uniquo and Interesting Item In the hlstorv of Orccon. is tho llrst largo celebration of tho Fourth of July which was hold In 1854, In tho Umpiiua valley, In the grovo by tho Umptiua Academy, where tho town of Wilbur now stands.! Tho entiro imputation of tho valley turned out, some coming ns far as thirty miles, In all about 000 persons. It was a Sunday school celebration, nil uniting at tho one point. At that time there was not a musical Instrument in that section, so no brass band headed tho procession, but a large banner was carried in front, on ono side an oi)on lliblo and on the other the words "Iced My Lambs." Tho president of tho day was Hov. J. II. Wilbur, oening prayer by Hov. J. W. Miller. Tho Declaration of Inde pendence was read by II. C. Jenkins, addresses to tho children and parents wcro nindo by Rev. J. O. Uaynor and Kov. West. Tho orator of tho dav was Judge It. K. Stratton. The mu8io was furnished entirely by singing of patriotic and religious songs, which rose as 11 sweet incense to heaven tuul scut echoes Hying back from the dis tant mountains. A largo Hag and streamer which were on the Academy were made by Captain Kilboru, an old seamen, and father of tho since famous auctloheer, Frank Kil boru, of Portland. Tho irrent attraction of the day was tho dinner. Two hundred nnd twenty five feet of table with scuts hud been constructed, two being each ono hun dred feet long, were set parallel and were connected at ono end by the twenty-five foot tuble. Two stoves were set lietween tho lonir tables and from these tea, coffee and hot vegetables were served. All tno disnes, tinware and knives nnd forks from the stores within reach were borrowed, to that the tables wcro well supplied. A luruo tin nail full of water nnd n dipper, was placed every ten feet throughout tho tables. Suclran nrray of good things to eat, as was witnessed on this occasion is seldom seen. Tho entire table was loaded. There were seventeen young pigs roasted wliolo nnd nlmost endless cakes, pies, bread, roast chicken, neas, etc., etc. Two men had been hired at $0 per tiny ench to dig n pit nnd bnrbnouo one-half of 11 lino fat beef and an unusually largo venison. Tho nntlors were loft on the door nnd he was stood up on tho cross table nnd decorated with w rent lies of How ers. Hovul. who was principal of tho Academy at that time, and who person uliy gathered up, marked anil returned without loss or mistake all the knives, forks and crockery tho only accident be ing tho breaking of one plate. The dinner utul expenses of tho cele bration weio raised by subscription and when nil wus paid tho balance, seven teen tlollars was donated to tho Acad emy.
