The Play Which Delighted New
Is Roasted in California,
Commenting upon "Tlio Turtle,"
which a Salem paper assured its read
ers was n nice family play, and far
from being tho worst ever produced In
Salem, tho San Francisco dallies amply
justify Tu k Jouunai.'s action in warn
ing its rcadors against that lllthy show.
Tho Examiner assorts that "Tho Tur
tle" is an offense; that there Is no ex
cuse for such u stupid drumutlc inde
cency, und adds: y
''Tho Turtle" desecrated tho Sabbath
at tho California Theater last night. Its
proper place was nt tho garlmgo crematory.'
muru is nonsense ior mis dramatic
pruriency. It certainly comes within
tho limits of the statutesand ordinances
framed to prevent offenses ogalnst tie
cony. Tho unspeakable Cremome might
welcome, though it Is a little too had
even for that haunt of sin and shame.
The Cull also treats "The Turtle" to a
pan roast, Its dramatic critic, Ashton
Stevens declures:
I wouldn't take Little Egypt to see
"Tho Turtle," the lllthy French farce
that was exposed in the California JTho
ter last night. It Is the most obscene
brutal siRjctaclo that I have ever wit-
iiessed In a licensed theater, and any
woman who intends sitting It out would
better paint her features a hot, red
blush.
The most of the lines, situations und
gcsticular insinuations are beyond cre
dence in u civilized community. In lxith
writing and acting "Tho Turtle" is a do
lilmrato npioal to drunken men and
bawdy women, and Its stench will lin
ger long in the California Theater.
The Chronicle Joins in the chorus of
denunciatien:
Never outside of o dive have such lines
been Miukon on a stage in San Francisco
as were hoard frequently last night in
"Tho Turtle," at the California Theater.
The advertisement of "spiciuowi" is an
imposition. "The Turtle" isonejof the
commonest, coarsest, most vulgar of
French farces. The only wit of its dia
logue lied in the bald translation of some
purely libidinous talk.
"Tho Turtlo" is not having as smooth
crawling on the coast as it counted on,
says the Portland Telegram. At Rutte
fie pajMrs roasted it; at Kokane it
was coolly received by press and people;
Soattlo gave it an indifferent hearing,
and tho Times laid it out, while at Sa
lem a wuitross at the hotel threw a glum
of water in the face of the man who
brought tlio dli ty show West, Ihhxiumj
he insulted her.
