Nearly Spoiled.
Washington, May 27. Troops in tho
Philippines cannot be paid in paper
money, for thore is a variety of ants
which eat everything, and aro partic
urlarly fond of paier. In a recent ship
ment of money for tho troops was
1 1,000,000 in paper money of small de
nominations, and preparations were lw
iug mado to send pacr in the next
shipment, when tho war department
was warned that hereafter nothing but
gold and silver coin must bo sent to the
islands. It was stated that the ants
got into tho boxes and attacked the
packages of bills, which wero saved
from destruction only by tho greatest
eare. So far as tho olllcials know, none
of tho money was actually destroyed,
tho ants only cntint! uwny the edges and
making holes through the bills.

Overland Train Collision
Poutlani), May 27, The Southern
Pacific southbound passenger train last
evening ran into the rear section of n
freight train that had got stalled on the
trestle in Oregon City last night and
the caboose and three freight cars weio
thrown from the track and more or
less wrecked, and tho pilot of tho pas
senger locomotive was broken. Nobody
was Injured. A wrecking train was sent
up from tho carshops and tho track
was cleared for tho passage of tho pas
senger train about daylight.

morning Major Dodge of tho paymasters
department, witli money on hand was
ready to begin tho payment of Cuban
troops but not n soldier was present to
receive tho $75 alloted by tho United
States for the surrender of their anna.
About four hundred men had been ex
pected and possibly many of theso will
come later. The scheme of payment,
so far as Havana is concerned, looks
like a failure, but quite different results
are expected in country districts, where
tho anti-Gomez inllueuco is not aH
strong.
