The showery weather Is making
many people apprehensive of too
much rain during the fair; but it is
not likely that we will haye any ex
tended iraln at this time. Indeed,
nothing could be nicer than this cool,
cloudy weather now when everyone
wishes to be hard a', work in prepara
tion for the big show. The showers
have laid the.dust on the roads and
streets, and there will beentire free
doom from the nulBance of dust
throughout the fair.
But whether it Is to be dust or rain

Enough can be seen now of the out-

show in all lines,
And the people will be there, too,
There Is an "easier" feeling among

prices are fair, and the farmer, hop
grower and orehardlst feels asjthough
he could afford to take In the fair.
Salem will turn out In force. The
work of the canvassing committees
proves that Salem business men gen
erally are alive to the advantages of
having a good fair here every year,
which will draw crowds from all over
the state. While these committees
have 'not, of course, sold their quota of
two hundred tickets apiece, they have
done good work for the fair, and have
soia many season tickets to parties
who otherwise would have contented
themselves with a single visit, The
association treasury will be several
hundred dollars better off for the
work of these gentlemen.
Out at the grounds, the track Is
well occupied during the forenoon,
with trotters, pacers and gallopers,
and the races promise to be faster
than have been seen here before.
Del Norte went around a couple of
times this morning in great shape.
lie will give an exhibition mile to
marrow, the first day of the fair, and
another on Saturday.
Another side-show tent has been
put up north cast of the pavilion.
Wagon loads of flowers and shrub
bery are. being placed In position at
the south end of the pavilion. It Is
understood that one of the exhibitors
making entries in this department
has withdrawn, fearing contagion to
her stock from, mould and Insects,
which she claims are prevalent among
some of the plants admitted. This Is
probably a false alarm, In any case,
the three remaining competitors
could each furnish an extensive dis
play, and they are all putting forth
their best efforts. No lover of flowers
should miss this opportunity to see
the best that can be produced In the
northwest.
The payl'Ion Is asccne of hustle and
upparent confusion, but order will be
brought out of chaos before the crowds
arrive tomorrow.
The poultry building has had four
large ventilators put In the roof,
whlchwlll tend to enhance the sweet
ness of the atmosphere therein.
Blooded cattle are now arriving at
the grounds In large numbers and be
lng assigned to the stalls set apart for
them This tine stock receives nearly
as much attention as the race horses,
being washed, brushed and curried
until they shine. A little Jersey bull
was taking his lirst sponge bath this
morning, so much against his will
that it took several ropes to keep him
on the ground.
Mac Porter, a Benton county pio
neer of 1852, arrived yesterday with
a carload of black polled cattle for the
state fair. He has four two-year-old
heifers, one yearling and one live
year-old bull. The latter was Im
ported, having taken a premium at
the .Chicago World's Fair as a ten
months calf. The rest of his herd
are Oregon bred and are beauties and
well worth seeing.
Race Program.
The programe for the first day's

Murray L. Wade will be clerk of the

After the close of the fair, many
visitors will undoubtedly go down to
Portland and attend the Exposition
there.
On Oct 3, you can go from any
