Douglas county over the school super
intendendency. Mr. Hamlin was
elected to the otilce, but be has gone

Good Work by Deputy Sheritls'in Run
ning Down Cattle Thieves.
Kansas City, Mo., July 28. A
special to the Star from Kufaln, 1. T.,
says:
In two dMInct battles with deputy
sheriffs, a gar got cattle thieves and
outlaws who have disturbed the Cher
okee nation for a long time, were de
stroyed. The llrst fight occurred six
miles cast of Checotah, and resulted
In one outlaw, a balfbrced Cherokee,
mmed Pctlt,bclng mortally wounded;
David Greathousc, an ex member of
the Freneb gang, was sligtly wounded
and captured. Later the remainder
of the gang were Intercepted near
Bragg's agency by Deputy Marshal
Lcdbctter with a posse, and nil the
out laws killed. These latter were,
Goodby, a brother of Olicrokcc Bill,
Mose Sharp and the famous Plckaloo
Bill.
Astoria The cash prl7.es at the
Public Bowling alleys last week were
won by Wallace with 50 and George
Johnson with 32.
Albany A number of people who
went to Waterloo Sunday were obliged
to walk home, as the Waterloo hood
lums punctured the tires of their
wheels.
Astoria A train made up of eleven
cars of salmon together with several
cars of mixed freight was hauled out
of Astoria on the railroad Tuesday
morning.
