is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to tho California Fio Svrup

Effected First Cuban
Landing. ?
Six Hundred Marines
at Guantanamo
Spaniards Fled at Approach
of Americans.
Old Glory Waves From a-Spanish
Flag Pole,
Key West, June 13. To the battle
ship Oregon, under command of Capt.
Clark belongs the honor of effecting
the first successful landing of troops
on Cuban soil, during the war. The
invasion was begun Saturday by the
American forces. Six hundred ma
rines have pitched tent about smoking
ruins of the outer fortifications of
Guantanamo and old glory is waving
over the Island,
Forty marines from the Oregon
went ashore Saturday morning and
occupied the point to the left of the
entrance of the bay, until the Pan
ther arrived with COO marines,
These, under command of Lieuten-anf-Colonel
Huntington, arrived at 3
o'clock, and within half an hour had
burned the buildings' of the Spanish
camp and had set fire to the miserable
little village which crouched on the
beach under the hills of G!:.ntanamo.PeenstranR,ed t0 death.-
The whole operation of silencing the
guns and landing the forces was as
easy as planning a Sunday school
picnic.
The Marblehead, backed by the
Vixen and Dolphin, had opened on the
earthworks. The shores tot the left of
the entrance were lined with guns and
rifle pits, but the Spanish stampeded
after firing a few shots.
The city of Guantanamo lies four
miles up the, bay, and a little Span
ish gunboat came down to help the
shore batteries. Rut she stayed just
long enough to turn around. Numer
ous shots were fired Jby the Spaniards,
but not one landed, and no Americans
were injured.
The main fort lies within the city
limits and is still to be reduced, but
it Is not in a difficult position, and
the American office's" say it can be
taken in 15 minutes.
The Marblehead, Dolphin,Vlxen and
twocolllers have been off the enter
ence of the harbor for several days.
Yesterday morning they sailed Into
the channel. A mile further up they
opened fire, sending 50 shots at the
fortifications on the left. Tho bliU
on the right of the entrance were
deserted. There are no defenses on
the right side of the harbor.
No attempt was made to land until
tho Oregon steamed In early Satur
day morning. Captain Clerk imme.
dlately sent 40 marines ashore, and
20 from the Marblehead followed.
They found evidence of a very hasty
departure by the Spaniards. "Watches,
hammocks and ammunition were scat
tered about the earthworks, and a
Spanish flag was found in one of the
the rfle pits.
The little detachment of marines
held the place until the Panther ar
rived, when they were recalled, and
the work embarkment began.Tbe first

25c. at all Drutr Stores,
boitlnad had scarcely landed when
tho village bur t into 'flames.
Company K, undcrLleutenant Hall,
was the first ashore, and without the
loss of a moment the column started
up ihc steep, rocky hillside to the
earthworks. For an hour a brown
column of marines filed up the nar
row path, eventually taking up a posi
tion at the top of the hill. As soon as
the American Hag was swung out to
the bree7afrom the flagstaff of the
captured Spanish camp, the Oregon
steamed away to rejoin the fleet off
Santiago.
The marines will hold the position
until the arrival of the expected
troops, in the meantime -scouting In
the vicinity, with .the Marblehead,
Vixen and Dolphin lying by to pro
tect them.
Rear-Admiral Sampson now has a
harbor and baso of supplies on the
south side of the island, and troops
can be landed at will.
The troopship Panther reached the
fleet off Santiago. On her way over,
the Yosctnite fired a dozen 6hells Into
the port of fiaiqulri, but received no
response.
Guantanamo Is about 40 miles east
of Santiago deCuba, and Is a splendid
location for a base of supplies for the
blockading fleet.
It is understood that the island of
Cuba is entirely cut off from cable
communication with the outside
world. Report here has it that the
cable-ship Adria, cut the cable at
Santiago, Monday, and that tho sane
day the St. Louli cub the cable run
ning from Guantanamo to Mole St.
Nicholas, naytl. She was Interrupted
by shells from the shore, but the
Marblehead sent several shells at the
soldiers and scattered them.
Little Girl Outac;ed.
Butte, Mont., June 13. Ethel Gill,
aged 9 years, disappeared from her
home on South Ohio street Thursday
evening. Iler dead body was fouud In
an outhouse several blocks from the
residence of her parents. The condi
tion of the body showed plainly she
had been outraged, and the marks
about her neck indicated that she had
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gill, parents
of the child, arrived here about two
months ago from Oakland, Cal. They
rented a cabin in the rear of 328 South
Ohio street. Thursday evening tho
child was playing with some other
little ones near the Northern Pacific
depot, not far "from tho child's home.
Since then nothing was seen of her
until this morning, when a female1
neighbor went into the outhouse and
saw what seemed to her to be a body
She notified some men in an adjoin
ing lumber yard, who went in and
secured the body. It was that of the
missing child. The clothing was
torn and disarranged, Dlscoloratlons
on the nccl' Indicated strangulation
and there was a mark on the left
temple, as if made by some blunt
instrument.
The police think they have the man
who committed the crime. He was
arrested about an hour after tho girl's
absence was noted, The police
wanted him on suspicion of burglary.
They found him in the lumber yard
not CO feet from the outhouse, There
were blood stains on his clothes, and
when questioned about them he could
give no satisfactory answer, "When
today's discovery was made, the police
thought of this circumstance. Since
then, witnesses have been found who
will swear they savv.tho man and the
child together on the evening of her
disappearance and shortly before his
arrest. The map gave his name as
Charles Smith, but ho is ulso known
to the police as nigglns. 1
When the girl's body was found and
he was suspected of that crime, the
police started to put hlra through the
sweating process. They made him
account for his actions and move
ments on the evening of tho girl's dis
appearance and his own arrest. He
did not do so In a satisfactory way.
Then he was taken to the undertaker's
where the body was being prepared
for burial, and made to look upon the
body, He stood the test manfully,
fie is a man about 28 years of age.
The theory of the police Is that the
girl had gone Into the outhouse, and
the man roiiowcu her and accom
plished his purpose. It is said she
was seen talking to a man answering
the description of the prisoner a short
time before 0 o'clock Thursday night.
The'glrl was of slender build, and
yery beautiful. Slhil was an only
child. She was horribly jmtilated.
The Inquest will Uko place Tues
day. Should absolute proof of any
one's guilt be obtained, there will
doubtlessbe a lyochlog.

Sand Point, Idaho, June 13. As
the cast-bound express train on tho
Great Northern was crossing a bridge
at Albany Falls, F. Schmelye, of San
Francisco, Jumped through a window
of a passenger coach, with the evident
intention or plunging Into the river.
He struck some of the timbers on tho
side of the bridge and fell back under
the wheels of tho train. Death was
almost instantaneous, Schmelye was
evidently German, A few minutes
before he jumped ho talked with 'the
conductor, asking where they were in
Idaho, the namo of the rler, etc.
A woman passenger attracted tho
attention of tho conductor for a
moment, when Schmelye sprang
through tho window. Tho woman
saw him jump and cried: "There ho
goes," but It was too late to stop him.
He left a family In San Francisco.

it Is not straight yet, but I think it

It is getting well without cutting or
