Latest Advices From a Salem Man in the Yukon Gold Fields. Tho following has just been re ceived from John Slmrleton bv his family in this city. It is the latest from tho. Klendike: Gold Bottom, N. W. T. Hunker Dist., Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 189., On November 12 the thermometer went down to 20 degrees below zero and has not been above since and most of the time it has been 30 degrees below and three times 40 degrees be low. This morning It was 40 degrees ueiow ana now it is 4a degrees below. There Is 14 Inches of snow. Tho limbs of the trees hang heavy with frost and snow. The weather Is clear and daylight comes at 0 a. m. and It is dark by 4;30 p. m. Tho sun was not in sight at all today for the lirst time and yesterday wo could lust see the edge of tt along the hills to the south. The nights are clear with the stars shining brightly except when dimmed by the beautiful auroras. We invited two friends to dinner today Mr. Robert Menzier, of Rochester, N. Y., and Mr. Joseph Roberts, ofCalllspcl, Mont., but Mr. Roberts had to go to Dawson on busi ness, so Bob, Earnest and I did justice to the Thanksgiving dinner which the boy's pronounced the best dinner since leaving home. December 19. When 1 was at Daw son which was about December 1, the mail had gono out.so I will try to get this off next month. On December 1, the thermometer went down to 60 degrees below zero. Since theu it has been warmer even colng as high as 40 degrees above and It has been snowing more or less. It Is daylight now from 10:30 a m. to 4 p. m. although wo cannot seo the sun. We get up at 0 a. m. have our breakfast, then go to work in tho shafts shoveling out the dirt thawed by tho fires the night before, that takes us till 1 or 2 p. m., then wo get lunch and cut wood and lay it in the holes ready for the tires for night, by this time it is dark, so wo get dinner then I usually cook and bako while Ernest washes dishes and cuts wood then at 9:30 p. m. wo go and start the tires in the holes and by the time this is done It is 10 or 10:30 o'clock so we go to bed. You see we don't have much time to write letters. After one has picked and shoveled two or three tons of gravel or hauled it up with the wind las and cut half a cord of wood, cooked his meals and done many other little things which come up In the course of tho day, lie does uot feel very gay: so It goes from one bun day til i the next and is we usually have some company cm Sunday, I have extra cooking to do and when nlght.coracs I am as tired as ever. All the claims on Hunker and Gold Bottom which have been worked to any extent are turning out fine, pans running as high as $74. These creeks are rapidly coming to the front and will be worth money this spring when sluicing time comes. Ernest Wagner Is well, but is homesick. He and Eben Singleton will go homo this summer if all goes well. Christmas we expect Messrs. Hall, Welch and Bayne over from Bonanza creek to have dinner with us, Wo have not seen them since November 1, but they were well at last accounts. December 29 Piof. Hall and party did not come over, so Bob Menzier. Joe Huberts, Ernest and I had to take care of the dinner, the following was our menue: Roast moose and pork with caan berry sauce, mashed potatoes, stewed tomatoes, maccaronl and cheese, apple dumplings, prune pie, Cherries, fruit cake, (made by Mrs.E. C. Cross.Salem) and chocolate caramels. Jan. 5 '98 there has been no mall In from tho world since October and we are getting anxious to hear from home. Tho last letter 1 received was dated Aug. 30, 1897. We have had moderate weather all winter, but today it is turning colder and as it is very clear wo may get some very cold weather yet. It 4s now 30 degree below zero. We have struck better "dirt" but of course will notknow till summer what our "out put'1 will be. All letters for Dawson N. W. T. should be driected yla Victoria, B.
