FROM SUNNY CLIMES
The Business End of '-The Journal"
Sizes up the Eden of America.
Pasadena, Feb, 2. We bave now
spent about a week at this famous
home-town for the wealthy winter
resort, summer resort, nature's sani
tarium, borne for invalids, heaven on
earth, or what you pleuse to call It.
They have had several frosts here,
reducing the ordinary profusion of
flowers to a minimum, a nd of course
making the customary "unusual sea
son." The temperature has ranged
from 00 to 75 degrees during the day,
and falling as low as freezing at
night, but the days are usually sunny
and the atmosphere Is delightful.
Pasadena Is beautifully laid out In
the rolling San Gabriel valley, about
thirty miles from the Paciiic. Its
streets are well graded up, and almost
lined witli over-hanging shade trees.
It is chiefly a residence city, and the
homes are built In all styles of- archl
tectuie, from the ancient adobe to the
modern brlc-a-br.c. Large lawns,
with'spreading palms, orange trees and
beautiful shrubbery, beautify the sur
roundings of every house, from the
slmpliest cottage to the most palatial
mansion.
People come here from all coi ners
of our land to get well, yet it is the
fashion here to be sick.
The mild, salubrious climate,
the sweet pure mountain and
sea air, as well as the fairy tales
about the wonderful fruits of the
tropics, draw thousands of tourists
here annually. The people who live
here have come in part; to enjoy
these luxuries, and other to supply
the needs of the suffer
ing. The hotels here are mod
els of comfort, and the doctors
are legion. Nearly every other home
on the fashionable streets has a phy
sician's sign on It, and in certain sec
tions boarding houses are equally
numerous.
A common sight these balmy morn
ings thousands of consumptive pati
ents and all grades of Invalids
taking in air, In carriages,
afoot and In rolling chairs. People
hobbling about on a crutch and ono
lung are the rule while the robust
physique and bountbous smile Is the
exception. This of course refers
chiefly to the tourist, as the average
resident. Is the personification of
health and hapnlness. It is claimed
theone-lUDger "is soon rehablltated
by the magic touch of the golden
clime, and then It Is only a matter of
time when be becomes a fixture
dead or alive.
It is a common thing to
separate the people here Into
two classes those who have con
sumption and those who think they
have It. The patleut who comes
here in the last stages immediately
thinks he is getting belter. Then
the other class, whose bronchial or
gans -ate sound and think it is the
fashion of the country to have con
sumption, soon get to feel that they
are going into a decline and It' only a
short time until they become con
vinced that they have the dread dis
ease. The probability Is both these
classes are mistaken as to their true
condition.
Los Angele., the .metropolis
of Southern California, is ten
miles west of this place, a
live bustling city, of 120,000 people,
still growing, but a place that offers
little opportunity for business except
for people with capital. Wages are
about the same here as In Oregon,
with but little better opportunity for
employment. Expenses of living are
about the same, rents are higher, but
the neonle grow more dependent fieie.
f torn the fact that all seem to depend
entirely upon the Influx of eastern!
people and money, ana iook less to me
results of what they produce on the
ground. Los Angeles, nevertheless,
Is a remarkably lively place.

MIODLE-OF-THE ROAD TALK.
Can See No Hope of Reform But Via
the Referendum Route.
Editor Journal. I hope you will
excuse mo ror ciisturolng your peace
of mind, but 1 think your treatment
or the uilddlo-or-thc-road Populists
very unjust. I wrote you bcfoie that
we had been life long Republicans,
but the party had become so corrupt
that we could no longer allillate with
It.
Then to go Into a party still more
corrupt, would be very foolish Indeed.
Oh, no, we shall neyer be such block
heads as to go Into the Democratic
iiarty, no never as long as we live.
They are Just as corrupt as the Repub
licans dare be. I 'tell you they are
one and the same thing, whichever
one is in power. It Is all puton the one
that is out of power. We have had
either a Republican or a Democratic
administration fur the last 20 or 30
years, and whichever one Is out
of office is always the one that should
have been in office, because it was the
reformer.
Now you say that you aim to be
thoroughly independent and fair.
If you are so Independent and fair
why do you takesldes against the only
real true Reform party in the whole
world. The mlddle-of-thc road Pop
ulist party la the only real reformer
we have at the present time. Suppose
we had the free and unlimited coinage
of silver, what would it amount to If
we were still si ives, winch we would
be with Bryan or the Democratic
party. Bryan and the party are one
and the same tiling.
uive us tne initiative and referen
dum with the imperative mandate
and the people will see that every
thing is done in good business shape.
Give us a voice in governing ourselves
and we will see to the free and unlim
ited coinage of silver and a great
many other-things of as (jreat-import-ance.-Talk
of themiddle-of-the-roader
belnga tool in thehands.ot oldllanna,
why, 1 would Just as soon
you would spit in my face,
o I say it is an outrage and 1 am not
going to let it pass. It is an insult
and I take it as such. I would stop
the Journal if there was a Reform
paper in Salem, but do not like to be
with out a home paper. We have been
subscribers of the Journal since It
was first edited and have always been
mucli pleased with the paper until of
late, you have become so wrapped up
in Bryan that you can not see any
good in anything but the Democratic
party. There is nothing new about
it, it is the same old sec-saw, the good
one out, the bad one in, it is the same
old trick they have been playing for
the last 30 years.
But some of us they can not fool
any longer. It seems very strange to
me that you do not see through this
Bryan trick. I know he Is a great
orator and has a very free and
beautiful flow of language. But
that will neither clothe nor
feed us. Did you ever know of a
merchant making this his standard of
proficiency that his clerk should be an
eloquent and fluent speaker?! think
not. It is good and well if he Is
blessed with the gift of a beautiful
flow of language, bu it Is not abso
lutely necessary. Bui It Is absolutely
necessary that ho should be endowed
with good common hoi so sense and
business ability. Take Old Abe Lin
coln for an example. It seems to me
it is high time that we as a people
get over this blind superstitution of
worshiping men who are educated and
those who receive high salaries? Are
they not the servants of the people? Is
a servant aboye his employer? I
think not, but such is the case at
present, we are worse than servants,
for we are the slaves of our clerks or
onlcers.that is why we, middle-of-the-road
Populist are so determined to
stand our ground. Give us our law
ful rights which is the initiative and
referendum with imperative mandate,
that is what we the people of these
United State of America demand, and
we 'Will never glye up because
we have taken the step and
will die for the cause of the people.
Alll these union fellows are after is
a soft snap of some kind.
Why do they not Join thoPopullsts?
Because they are afraid they will not
get their sharo of the offices, it is
nothing more or less.
Cooper their leader said so himself
in your paper.
Now, we arc not caring
ono cent about what Cooper or any of
the soft snap seekers want, we the
people have our wants, and we are
going to bave them too.
C. B. and B. W. IIarritt.
