Rlggs, as per his repert:

There were 32,880 feet uf lumber
used in tho new work and making re
pairs, of which amount 11,060 feet
were paid for out of the street funds,
tho general fuud being drawii on for
tho balance. In repairing the steel
bridge tin last approach was redeckod
and those across South Mill e.reek
tightened and adjusted. Thero were
1,900 loads of gravel hauled onto the
streets. The Court street tower was
cleaned and repaired, and two new
manholes put In, besides other repairs
made on the streets.
Alderman Parkhurst asked that
the city recorder notify all delinquent
Insurance companies to pay licenses
at once. Adopted.
Recorder Edcs reported the re
ceipt of n certificate of deposit from
awaiiord compromise for $3,855, the a
eauio being placed to the credit of the
city recorder. The sum compromised
for was $4,000, but Attorney Bingham
having taken out u fee of $145 fur
legal services boforo turning the
amount over.

tainment than u delegation uf jolly
college boys. It will be the privilege
of tho Salem public to seo the Uni
versity of Oregon Gleo Club at tho
Itccd tonight. This company Is re
ceiving very complimentary mention
through the press, Speaking of the
entertainment by this club at Albany
Monday evening, the Democrat says:
"Tii3 University of Oregon Glee
Club made their slop at Albany on
their first annual tour, and performed
at the opera house last night to an
audience of about one hundred fifty.
The club was given a warm reception,
and the appreciation of tho program
was evident from the first number,
nearly every selection being encored.
Besides the catchy songs of tho club
were five specialities. Chas. Gallo
way, son of the receiver at Oregon
City, who one year hold tho prize in
the Interstate oratorical contest, dis
played rare talent In his Impersona
tions, and received a fast encore. W,
Gilford Nash was heard on the piano
In several selections, W. K. Glen gave
a coster song and Prof I. M. Glen a
baritone solo, all well received, but It
was left for Allen Eaton in his mon
ologues to capture tho audlcuco. He
Is a genius and nearly a whole show
all alone. The club Is made up of a
line lot of gentlemen, and the Demo
crat hopes they wlllftneet with the
favor they deserve on thalr tour."

sists of Misses, (icnevieve and Ethel
Hughes, Obkio Matthews and Esther
Collins, assisted by Prof. E. Fleck, of
the College of Music of Willamette

campment No 2. 1. O. O. F. held Tues
day evening, the annual election of
ollicers resulted as follows. Claud

D. C. Sherman, scribe; and John G.

The board of trustees of the First
Christian church, of this city, has
received a favorable answer from Rev.
J. J. Evans, of Salinas, Cal., to whom
a call to the pastorate of tho local
church had recently been extended.
The reverend gentleman has cccopted
tho call and expects to reach Salem
shortly after the first of the year to
begin his labors with the local church.
The annual election of officers for
the Seventeenth and Chemcketa
street Evangelical church was held at
7:30 p, m., In the class room, Tuesday
evening. The election resulted as fol
lows, all to serve one year, with the
exception of the trustee, who is elected

will be played in Albany, Saturday
evening, January 1st. In the after
noon preceding the baseball game,
football teams from Albany and Sa
lem will contest for supremacy on the
gridiron. A number expect to accom
pany tho teams to Albany where a
very enjoyable time Is anticipated

A merry party of young people as
sembled at the home of Claude Mo
ran, No. 500 Mission street, .Tuesday
evening in response to invitations.
Claude was eminently successful In
entertaining his young friends, a fact
that Is attested to by all who had tho
pleasure of belug present. Numerous
games were heartily Indulged in, alt
of which was supplemented by a de
lightful lunch.
In the conundum guessing contest
tho first prize, consisting of a service
able pin cushion, was awarded Miss
Allie Cadwcll. Hugh Williamson and
Gates Cochran had equal claims on
the "booby," but In drawing straws
the latter was successful and was pre
sented with a small toy horse and
wagon.
