EDITORIAL.
From January to September nearly
$100,000,000 worth or breadstulTs were
exported. In same months lust year
wo exported $SJ,000.0"0, In 1895 $65,
000,000. No no can honestly claim
this export trudc is affected by lite
tariff. Wearclucky If the Dlnley tar

to raise up barriers nalnst our grain
and meat products In the form of re
taliatory duties.
Harper's Weekly has a cartoon on
John Bull "arter the jubilee." He

foot of the bed. It has clawlcd out

Thendxfc Oregon senatorship should
not be disposed of to the highest bid
der, nor made the prize of a secret
raffle. It Is almost time Oregon had
a senator who wont openly before the
people and told them where he stood
on public questions, be ;he for single
or double standard.
The statement of a representative
American that this couutry was en
joying prosperity at the expense of
other countries, Is "true to an extent
or all prosperity, local or national.
When there w:n lack of employment
at Salem the woolen mills burned.
Result, employment furnished but at
expense of Insurance companies and
subscribing stockholddrs We have
wheat to sell. Frosts, unseasonable
weather, lack of rain, too much hall,
In England, France. Arglntlne, Rus
sia, India, Australia, makes It bring
a higher price. Tbe American
farmer will pay his debts because the
farmers or the other countries cannot
pay theirs Ills children will go to
college because the poor or other lands
will eat smaller loaves at a higher
price. But ror this lack or prosperity
elsewhere, where would our prosperity
come from? We would have corn to
burn and wheat to throw to the swine
as we did in 1893. It Is well to
bo thankful for our prosperous condi
tions but it lb well to remember In
our rejoicing what a famine in India
and distress elsewhere have helped
produce.
How do you prononnoo tho word,
"God?" Tho English Poet Watson
In his newest poem, "The Unknown
God," makes It rhyme with "load"
In his ilrst verso and with "clod" In
tho last. In the Teutonic and Scan
dinavian languages It Is given the
long sound, which would indicate
that the correct pronnunclatlon
rhymes more nearly with "load" than
with f'clod," but atall times the word
is to be spoken with reverence.
Parents should bo thinking now

The Ignorance of the average con

private corporation controlling such a

With even a half or a crop or hops
saved, at present prices hop growers
will mot better results from the crop
this .year 'than for two years past.
Chances are favorable to saying more
than half a crop. The bad weather
has caused loss to pickers. Their
season was not profitable.
A city of Mexico -Telegram says:
"Remarkable activity is shown in the

noticeable since the sharp decline In

development of home enterprises.
The completion of tho trans-Siberian
lalhvay, with Its eastern terminus
on tho western shore of the Pactfl'j
will transfer the commerce of north
ern Europe and Asia to the racltic
coast. Then with the construction
or the Nicaragua canal would come
another commercial revolution that
would multiply 'the shipping or this
northwest coast, which would become
tho center or commerce between the
old and now worlds.
One French steamer, the other day
took out 505,000 ounces silver from
New York. The fanatics who cry
down sliver and rejoice that It Is
worth but half as much as It was less
than ten years ago, no doubt lament
that anvono buys this product of
American mines. They seem oblivi
ous to the fact that the world over
there 19 about as much coined silver
as gold. But it Is tho money of the
vulger herd, called tho masses, who
seldom or over see gold. But for the
special advantages given by legisla
tion tho common herd could not be
skimmed on exchange the world over.
If you would save useless bills this
winter give tho children their free

thollttlo ones freedom to run in open

and all the sleep they want In well
