First Letter From the Late Princi
pal of Lincoln School.
The following Is the llrst letter re
ceived from Prof. J. O. Hall, lat
principal of the Lincoln school, of tills
city. He left Salem on the 3rd day of
August, 1897, in company with Messrs.
Welch and Bay nc for the Klondike.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jory, of Salem,
sailed on the same vessel. He writes
from Sitka, August 14, on board the
steamer Queen, and mailed upon ar
rival at Juneau. Another letter is ex
pected describing the landing and trip
to Skaguay.

On board steamer Queen (between
Fort Wrangel and Juneau) August 10.
You notice by the heading our loca
tion at this time. We left .Seattle at
10:30 a. m., Saturday, August 7, O. K.
shape. We left Bayne to buy two
more horses,also to get them shod and
place them upon a bargto called the
AJax, He bought passage on the
steamer Mexico, which was to sail
yesterday; however he will not be able
to go this year if he depends upon her,
as she was wrecked on Mary's Island
and sunk In 70 fathoms of water.
Mr. Welch and I have eojoyed the
trip Immensely, with the exception of
the table fare. I think that they
give the least and serve It in tho poor
est shape of any that I ever saw. We
are sitting In midship, looking east
ward, and seeing some of ithe grand
est sights. Tho view Is made up of
mountains, peaks and glaciers. They
are changing colon constantly, begin
ning usually with white, .showing all
of the tints of the rainbow In succes
sion. There are a great many excursion
ists on board; among them are tho
Vandcrbllts and Sloans. They have
not called at our stateroom yet. I
suppose they regard us a little formal
and are waiting for us to move tirst.
We crossed to Port Townsend about
forty milps northwest of Seattle, and
arrived at 1:20 p. m. The wharf was
packed with people, from one end to
tho other, mothers accompanying
thalr sons and husbands to give the
parting good bye. Some even'threw
rice after them for good luck. I find
some ot the men wavering and un
doubtedly some will return. A great
many are leaving families with small
children, and it strikes a yery tender
chord when they talk about them.
There arc men hereof every 'race and
description, from nearly every place
and nearly every state, except the
south. I think they are as a whole
the finest looking and best appearing
class I ever saw engaged in the same
enterprise. They aro happy, usually
obliging and intelligent. Nearly
every one to a man is for free silver.
Many of the Masonic fraternity aro
among them.
Time Is passed in eating, sleeping
and walking. I do not stay upon the
upper deck, as we thoughtlessly did
not check our heavy clothes as bag
gage, and it is too cool without them.
Nothing of Importance occured on
Sunday. We saw a great many
whales as they were rising to spout.
We picked up some of tho Mexico
crew on tho way, but they were cut
loose soon afterward, as the boat was
to small to be towed as rapidly as wo
were going. I think they were bound
for a certain place, so did not care to
come aboard, as their little craft ap
peared to bo a very worthy one.
This morning wo stopped at Ft.
Wrangel, the village of totem poles.
Wo counted thirteen in all. This
place s made up of Indians und dogs,
tho former of tho lowest type, I
counted fifteen dogs with ono family.
They aro so superstitious that they
dare not kill them.
I bought a sealskin cap, round In
form and It appears very much tho
same as tho picture tho Examiner
gives. Gavo ono dollar for It. It is
grey or nearly white and made from
tho skin of a baby seal. We aro
thoroughly equipped In our food and
clothing, and hayo nothing to fear on
this score. All of us havo extra socks,
boots, coats, Mucklnaws etc., so you
seo wo aro comfortable. What wo
want Is to have luck with us, and a'l
will be sunshine In a short time.
We have stout hearts, and firmly be
lieve the Lord will guide and care for
us.
We aro getting very favorable re
ports from time to time, which of
course are very encouraging. Geo.
Bayne was a most valuable addition
to our party, and wc liked him more
and more while he was with us. Mrs.
Jory Is a pusher, and will make a
strike if It Is to be made. Will close
and write mole at Juneau if 1 have
time. We expect to get there at 10
p. hi. today and say until 7 a. tn. to
morrow. From there we go over to
Trcadwell and from there to Skaguay.
We will reach there tomorrow at
noon. Then comes the great work
over the pass. Wc want to get started
down the river by September 1.
There arc seven women going over,
two of whom are colored.
LANDED AT SKAQUAV.
Skaguay, Thursday, August 12. We
reached here all safe. Did not have
an accident on the way. Stopped at
Juneau over night. It is a-typical mi
ning town enclosed on two sides by
mountains. Gambling and dance
houses open day and night. Its very
life depends upon the mining and fish
ing industries.
Yesterday we stopped at the James
Treadwell mines, the largest In the
world. It rained all day and is at it
still. Our ship is lying at anchor
with hatchways down, and it is very
hard to ascertain much. One report
says there aic two thousand people
waiting here. We will probably stay
for a week or more before Geo. Bayne
gets here.

RodneyStiles, who was working for
nenry Gilpin, driving tho team that
operated the derrick with a thresher,
while at work Saturday, a short dis
tance from Tho Dalles, met with an
accident that caused his death. While
hauling a big fork full of grain to the
derrick wagon, tho double-trees broke
and one end of them struck Stiles in
tho stomach. He lived but a few
hours after the accident.
