How tho tired workers, who never get
away from home, would breathe In
this refreshing air, and bathe in this
Invigorating surf. How all the dogs
would enjoy romping In the sand and
water. Even the animals revel In the
luxury afforded by the ocean air and
" water, the expanse of scenery and the
excitement of a change from inland
to seashore. This place ought to be
the summer home of the Salem Illi
hee club, as it is probably the most
famous illustration of the meaning of
that Indian word, "a good land,"
or which signifies "a good home," in
the sense of affording boundless en
tertainment and hospitality. What
a grand thing it Avould be for iifty or
one hundred families to buy and pre
serve such a natural pleasure ground,
with so many substantial attractions
and advantages, and each year live
here from one to three months, sum
mer or winter. It is a heaven of re
cuperation for a business orprofes
Hional man.as there Is no city or town
atmosphere about It. It Is just pure
unadulterated nature in its loveliest
and most charming aspect.
THE SEAL ILLIHEE.
As you drive down the beach from
Mtwport, after you cross Beaver
creek, the road turns up the hill and
In u moment are in a basin watered
by a spring brook, and to the left is an
old rockpUe, the first white man's
llllhco on this beach. To the south
west stretches far to sea tho
jagged and broken black basalt range
called Seal Rocks, tho home of tho
seal and sea lion whose roar can be
heard above tho roar of tho breakers.
This is the original "Seal Illihee,"
now a delightful summer resort hotel
called Seal Rocks.
It Is owned by Win. P. .Stltt, a
Scotchman, and conducted by him
self and wife and family. Mr. -Stltt
cumo to this coast as a sailor in 1808,
engaged in tho oyster business at Ya
Equina bay in Its palmy days, when
mon mado -$15 to $25 u day, and when
that bay was literally gutted of its
bivalve treasures, which wero shipped
by sailing vessels to 'Frisco and taken
Inland for hundred, of miles by
teams. Mr. and Mis. Stltt tiro good
entertainers and untiring In their ef
forts to please. Tho rate ut Seal
Rocks hotel Is 81.25 a day or $8 a week.
Seal ltock.s is tho most naturally
romutlcaud picturesque summer re
sort on the north Puoltio coast. For
two miles great masses of broken
rock aro tumbled over eacli other on
the beach. If there Is over u rail
road built down the coast this region
will becomo moro accessible, and Seal
Rocks la.byiund to, ba a great fashlon
ablo summer resort, A pier could be
easily built Into the ocean for vessels
to land, as there Is a mud bottom
here. The steamer Farallon saluted
the governor's cottage as she went by
on the 13th on her way to Alaska, a
custom of Captain Roberts ever since
he had the governor for a passenger to
Frisco and return.
AMONG THE COTTAGES.
there stands the summer home of
Governor Lord, or rather of Mrs. Lord
and the family, or still more rather of
the family, for the Governor's ollicial
duty und Mrs. Lord's numeious Helds
of iiax under process have takeu them
both away and left them little time
for recreation. Their liome Is now in
charge of Miss Lee, the primary
teacher who is off duty on a month's
vacation. She Is an accomplished
camper, a good trout fisher, a fine
housekeeper, and not afraid of a ten
mile tramp in any direction.
The Farrar, Hawthorne, Earhart,
Washburn, Black, Mercer and several
other families have cottages, but the
price of lots is not high and a dozen
more cottages could be filled if they
wero built. A cottage ought to be
enclosed und have a vegetable garden
put in in the spring. As the soil is a
mixture of sand, shells, fish bones,
guano, remains of sec lions and other
ocean animals, it seems as though
the great head Gardner of the Uni
verse had been at work for thousands
of years here to prepare this soil for
the production of tho most perfect
fruits, potatoes and vegetables. I am
told that this place was the most fa
mous Indian camp on this coast. The
original coast tribes lived on shell
llsh, and berries for side dishes, but
sea lion and whale blubber wero their
substantials. I have seen squaws
chow up a slice of a stranded whale's
blubber with as much gusto as a.
schoolboy would a "hunk" of taffy.
This Is a great resort for whales, and
on any fair day a school of a hundred
or more can be seen playing off shore,
spouting water and showing their
backs.
Occasionally a great right whale an
almost extinct species, comes ashore,
but most of the fish seen aro the black
whales that do Jnoti grow to bo over
50 to CO feet long. Right whalesgrow
to bo 100 to 120 feet long, one such
fish 110 feet long coming ashore on
the beach north of Newport a few
years ago. The monster was cut up
for his oil, and tho jawbones are still
lying on the street at Newport.
SOME ANCIENT HISTOKY
is connected with Seal Rocks. John
Gaunlor, a French Canadian half
breed now on Siletz river, says his
father was the first white man to ills
coyorSaal R'icks. John is now ovo
CO years old. Ills father, who was a
Hudson Bay yoyagcur, afterwards
took a wlfo from lamong the Indians
and begat John junior In his "Illihee
close" at a point now called Stanford,
on Alsca Hay no went down to
the Unipquii whero ho built a fori for
the Fur Company and died close onto
tao years of age. I commend his hab
its of life to alb the highly notable
single bucks of tho Salem Illihee club
If they would attain a grand
eld age. But John Giuinlcr, and his
company of half breeds and Indians
received nota little rough treatment
as they attempted to pass tho Great
Seal JUlhee, or Seal Rocks Thous
uiids of Indians wero camped there,
and It took threo days sharp lighting
to drive them tiff the rocks so
that tho cxploriug party could go on
South. Tho Indians fought llko
llgera against tho first advnnco
agents of European civilization. It
was their sacred camping ground,
rich with all that went to sustain sav
age life. The rocks were, as they arc
now. alive with shrimp, clams, ostcrs
and mussels. At low tide the sand
breaches arc full of razor-back clams
that here attain an Immense size. The
rocks are full of crabs and sea birds.
At nearly all seasons the waters ore
alive with mackerel, herring, cod,
grouper, has and smelt, and as regu
lar as the tides there come up the
salmon In their season out of tho sea
to seek the fresh water streams, lit
erally swmmii'g out upon the land.
Such a place inut have been n per
fect hoaven for lazy savages, and no
wonder they resisted John Gaunler.
HEAVER CREEK
Is a famous trout water. It must
have been a tidal stream, but the
gradually rising beaches have cut It
off, so that It Is now a perfectly land
locked lake-like sheet, winding back
into the dead limber hill country.
The Beaver Is fed by countless springs
and brooks from the hills, and Is
eight to ten feet deep and the banks
arc level lleHs and meadows six inches
to a foot above the surface of the
chrystal clear water. It used to be
alive with trout, from the speckled
beauty of the brook to the salmon
trout, sea trout and largest Chinook.
The high tides of winter and spring
siiill permit the ocean salmon to run
into the Beaver and the farmers for
miles back supply themselves with
salmon to salt and smoke from this
stream'. When they arc running in
from the ocean they are speared in
large quantities, and the Indians aro
said to have captured them as is de
scribed in WalterScott's "Red Gaunt
let," by spearing the lish from on
horseback. We did not do this but
were satisfied to catch some fine ones
with ihe troll-hook, but as usual the
finest got away.
PRIMITIVE ENJOYMENTS
are tho rule here. To see the ladles of
the Salem Four Hundred wading like
little children In the surf; to go clam
ming und dig for the nimble razorback
as lie goes workiug down into the
mixture of wind and salt water .which
constitutes his home; to take a rake
and gather the rock clam, a variety
pcculiai to Seal Rock; to pick the
rock oyster and mussels like a paddy
on the railroad; to gather huckleber
ics, wild str.uv.i3rries, nr.v just
ripening here, is for grown people to
recur to the delights ot childhood and
become young again. At night we
have bonfires on the beach and it is
comical to behold men who never so
niucjhas put a hand to a lawnmower at ;
home, and who write the final inter
pretation of the peoples' laws and
shape public policies, here struggle
with no less weighty matters like
driftwood logs and swing an axe to
get out good fir knots to make a blaz
ing lire. The children play old-fashioned
games on the level beach, while
older ones sit on improvised benches
and listen to a wierd symphony com
posed of the dashing breakers, the
moaning nightwinds, tho crackling of
the fire and shouts of the little ones.
"Next morning some of the men de
cido to go on a lish and hunt in the
Yahats country. There are early
breakfasts, rigging up of rods and
rllles, arrangements for a week's
camping out, speculation as to
whether an elk, or how many deer
shall fall by the hunter's hand, und
they're off by the Alsea state line.
