office. It Is true there are law clerks
connected with the commissioner's of
fice, familiar with the routine of
duties, and in a general way they may
be capable of disposing of many legal
questions, and thus enabling tbe com
mlssiner to get along without much
law and to pass as a man offense and
judgment, but this is not the kind of
a man for the commissioner's oflke.
He ought to be a first class lawyer and,
ir lie is sucu, nts attainments are
always recognized and beyond the
reach of criticism. Mr. ITorniann is
also a free silver man galvanised over
with Mark Hanna's gold. It is said
there are a whole lot of appointments
to be made soon, and, If those already
made are a sample of those to follows

Bowersox, who for the past six years
served as pastor for the United Evan
gelical church at Salem, is now located
at La Fayette, where he is president
of tbe Seminary of bis church which is
located there. Sunday morning tbe
reverend gentleman preached an ex
cellent sermon, selecting for his theme
tbe third petition of the Lord's
prayer, "Give Us This Day Our
Dally Bread." vi bile tbe gentleman
Is a staunch McKinley man, yet be
believes in looking elswhere for his
dally bread. La Fayette has a well
established high school with able and
talented Instructors and an attendance
of about 150.
Yamhill county is one of those dis
tricts In which tbe free silver ele
ments in the majority. At the last
election every office from constable
tonenator and representative, with
the exception of two justices of the
peace, went to the silver party. At
the next election tbe silver forces pro
pose to elect the two justices that
were slighted lost year.
McMinnville, the county seat of
old Yamhill, so pleasantly and beau
tifully located within a few miles of
the foot hills of the Coast range, is
one of the prettiest cities on the
West Side. McMinnville, Is a live
business center and has excellent
connection with Portland via the
West Side railway. There arc two
beautiful and costly public school
buildings aud the McMinnville col
loge, of the Baptist denomination Is a
beautiful structure. R. Jacobson has
begun the erection of a two story
brick on the principal business street
Into which he will soon move his
large stock of gents furnishing goods.
The Titos. Kay woolen mills has a
branch store at this place, which en
joys a big business. We saw the Mc
Minnville diamond upon which the
baieni baseball team was bo cruelly
massacred last Thursday but, In our
mourning, we find consolation in the
fact that the Chemawa boys defeated
the team from the West Side at Ore
gon City, Saturday, tho score stand
fug 10 to 7 In their favor.
