Hood river strawberry shipments
began May 11, with a crate and a
half, and idcreased to 125 crates on

health entirely and is again robust
and hearty:
"The place seem'! to agree with me
and 1 look better and feel better than
I have for manv years. When the
showers come, and tbey come often,
we work Inside. It thunders harder
here than any place 1 ever was In and
don't wonderat the Kaffirs shouting
at the storms when ti'cy conic up to
drive them way. The clouds arc
sometimes itiky black and nearly
touch the it ound and when It rains'
it pours down in toiicnts.
"Times are pretty hard and dull
hde at present, the smaller mines are
closed, tnough there are hundreds of
them yet running. The reef is about
sixty miles long and all covered with
mines and those worked are on a
small scale and all the on r is low grade
and takes lots of money to work it.
