No Great Boom But a Very Bright
Future,
Uossland B. 0. May 81 linvc
bcon some tlmclfcf Rossland, nnd as
many of my friends are thinking of
com lag lierc, and want some Informa
tion about tlic place, I thought it
better to glyc it through the columns
of The Journal.
It Is a hard matter to describe this
place, what has :becn done and the
out look for the future.
The articles I have seen in the press
Uivc been in the main true. But not
all of the truth consequently very mis
ending. The term hundreds of build
ings going up Just now, leads one to
think it is booming, when the reverse
it a truer stuto of affairs.
There arc at this writing about 'ten
buildings In course of erection, that
will average 20xC0 and two stories
high, but do not amount to much as
far as work is concerned, eight or ten
men will finish one in two weeks.
Then there arc aboui thirty build
ings whose average will -.be 12x10 one
story high, what are known as box
and rough, three men will build one
of these in three days.
There are at a rough estimate about
twenty-Aye hundred buildings, twenty
hundred of these will not average
more than 12x20, one story, box.
Daring the winter these shantys
went up like mushrooms, and carpen
tersand laborers kept rushing In and
are si ill coming, while the mushroom
bjsincss has ceased.
The result is apparant to anyone.
More idle than busy men. This is the
.vorst place for working people to come
to In America Just now for work, as a
nan is lucky, indeed, IT he strikes
work, and expenses are very hlgh,$G a
month for one room cabin, unfurn
ished, and it will perhaps cost you $3
per week for food. But if you want
anything like a home spot, everyone
culling himself man is entitled to, it
will cost you just. $7.75 per week, with
5cc ts extra for nic and l" cents extra
for eggs with fresh meat order. I
was told at Salem t hat Brown was
making from $5 to $10 per day on sash
and doors, .and Tthat .another mu
from Scotts -Mills was working every
day for $3 per day. This last man. 1
found working for his board and
Brown and Shipp, of Salem, not doing
even that well, neither having work.
The true state of affairs given me
ten days ago would have saved me
some money, but bought experience
is the best, and this is all my own and
paid for.
As for Rossland and Its future I
have but one opinion. That Is the
future looks even brighter than now,
(of course to mining men), There are
a good many mines working and ship
ping ore. Many working and piling
up ore for future use, and now mines
dot the hill sides everywhere, In all
stages of development. Had I money
for Investment I would buy stock here
in preference to any other. The
provincial government have new min
ing laws before Its committees now,
with a view to securing greater
safety to investors of minnlng stock.
There are today shares being sold on
mines that do not exist. But there is
no need of any one loosing. It It a
small matter to find out whether a
certain mine exists or not and its
stage of develppement, prospects, etc.
The Le Roy mine probably shows the
very best developement bo far (al
though the War Eagle is not far be
liind.) They have some of the very
best machinery. The drills are
worked with air compressors,350(h.p.,)
with fly wheel weighing fifteen tons,
and the mine is some 600 feet deep.
The expenses of shipping ore are
thousands of dollars.,, Ttfey expect to
build a Rmclter for this and other
mines, near the Internationa bound-!
iiiy, In the near future.
Five cents invested in this mine a
few years ago would be worth $750
now. Don't some of you McKinley
men wish you had bought a thousand
shares? Well, you didn't and now
with a four story tariff your golden
opportunity la gone. There is more
conlldence today IrLthoEeRoi mine
stockholders than ihe (people of the
United States have In the ability of'
the government to restore prosperity
with such n tariff. But tlmo will
tell. Well, all good people, stay where
you arc, ir you can. The mechanical
and business part of Rossland has'
simply got ahead of the mines. The
mines will 6oon catch up, then fir
another boom. i
The cars contain machlnory for new
mine every day. Spokane furnishes1
some, but the cast gets the plumb.

In the mandamus suits against!
Secretary Klncaid the attorneys for
the petitioners will it Is said endeavor
to have the supreme court advance
them on the calendar for argument.
This movement the attorneys for the
secretary will resist as there is nn octai
sion for taking their cases up for ar
gument out of their regular older.
They claim there is no private or pub
lic exigency to entitle their cises to
the right of way. While they admit
that it is a great wrong to keep tied
up in tlio treasury half a million of
dollars of the people's money for the
next two years, yet they say no judg
ment of the supreme court could un
lock the vaults of the treasury. That
can only be done by the legislature
and they can only be commenced for
that purpose by the governor, lie
is the officer who might if he would
send tho creditors of the state to the
treasurer for their money, instead of
to the bankers. The appeal for re
lief should be made to the executive
and not to the judiciary. That is the
position, we understand, of the secre
tary and his attorneys.
