The senate of the present legisla
ture has employed slxty-lx commit
tee clerks, who are sworn in and
drawing pa at the rate of from $3 to
M a day, Tills has been going on
crer since the senate was first organ'
Ized. Some of these committees have
not had a single bill referred to them.
Home committees hare had only one
or two bills referred to them. And
few committees bare held any scmJodi

of having the only committee without
a clerk, How long tho Senator will
allow himself to stand In this envi

least has tho satisfaction of having
caused tho statu no uselvrs oxpenso,
nor will his confidence suffer bocauso
ho bus hulped to corrupt the mind of
any youug man or woman by tempting
them to tako what they have not
honestly earned.

pledges he cannot get over 30 repaMl

assembly.
Mitchell and Illreh in the face of
this defeat, propose to continue tbe
deadlock, and claim tne allegiance of
the thirty-eight against all other In
terests. Mitchell and Hirsch propose to play
the old game: we have spent 123,000
or 150,000 In legitimate expenses of
this senatorial battle and will trans
fer our votes to no candidate who
does not recompense us and who is
not prepared to till our pledges.
This Is the ancient, childlike and
Impudent proposition now before the
people of the state of Oregon. How
can the people regard such a pretense
of a rested right In tbe blockade of a
legislature and the corruption of poli
tics? Tills same scheme has once before
been carried out in Oregon politics
and can be proven in the history of
notable senatorial struggles of this
state? Shall It be done again? We
believe the people prefer no senator to
onclextendlng this regime of corruption.

Andrew K. Wright died last Mon
day, at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. John F. Johnson, of 2ortb Yam
hill. He was born Jfay 10, 1820, in
Bedford county, Pennsylvania. He

in 1836; thence to Texas in 1844, retur

Hugh Goodman met with a severe

When he shot the cartridge, the gun
burst at tbe lock, several pieces of
metal stroking him In the face. One
