Several young men who recently
joined the Insurgents at Manzanlllo
report the existence of widespread
dlsalfcctlon among the followers of
Bibl and Callxto Garcia.
Advices have been received from
Trinidad that several young men who
recently Joined tho Insurgents at
Sancti Splrltus reported that a num
ber of days since Maximo Gomez was
encamped near La Campania. On tho
1st of January, it is asserted, the in
surgent leaders, Josi Miguel and
Gornc., passed by the Mapos plantar
tlon, In company with other Cuban
Insurgent commanders.
Over 500 families nro reported to
have been burned out of their houses
owing to the recent orders to destroy
the property, and even the Homes of
paclflcos. Many of these persons have
been unable to save even their cloth
ing. Mothers are carrying their ba
bies In their arms, and are without
food and resting places. Old, gray-
headed men and women arc barely
able to move, owing to the prolonged
period of suffering, and many of them
will probably starve to death.
The magnlflcont nugar estate of
Santa Rosa has been burucd by the
Insurgents. For several days the hor
izon has been brilliantly Illuminated
by the destroying llrcs. Many of the
canellelds In this vicinity are stlJl
burning.
The sugar plantations of Ilormu-
glorc, Parquo, Alto, Tumba and Saco,
all belonging to foreigners, located In
tho Clenfuegos district, have received
orders to suspend the grinding of cane.
They hope to commence again Jan
uary 11!.
Texas Rangers in Evidence.
Ciucacio, Jan. 11- Tho Chronicle's
special from Key West. Fla., says:
'cv8 was received here from the
Plnar del Hlo country to the effect
that the Lone Star company of Texas
rangers In tho Cuban army had
again distinguished themselves.
From the reports It appears that they
defeated a much larger force than
themselves, capturing the Spanish
captlau and taking a provision train
that the Spanish detachment was
guarding.
Tho battle took place last week,
propably on Friday, Judging- by the
date of the letter received, near
Placlue, south of Cristobal. A de
detachment of 300 Spanish cavalry
was escorting n tralnloadof provisions
along this route, when the Texans,
who only numbered 1C0 h.cn ambushed
both sides ot the road. Tents, arms,
ammunition and provisions were cap
tured. Tho Spanish lelt tlvo dead
and forty wounded on the Hold, while
the Cubans had tlvo killed and four
teen wounded.
