-MR. GEER'3 SPEECH.

was the ablest effort, for the gold
stnndar.I, yet made' n't Salem. Tub
Jouunal nay this In all sincerity. It
lias always treated Mr. fieer with
more consideration than any paper In
the county. It hart aluny.s considered
him a fair man and his ability ban
been generally conceded. Hut wo
are forced now to condemn what we
consider an unfair attack, by Mr.
Geer, on Friday night,
Mr.Gcer read an editorial Hem from
Tub Journal to this effect: "The
Htandard Bllvcr dollar! a legal tender
dollar. It Is not a gold-redeeniptlon
dollar, It Is not a fiat dollar. It In
not a Mexican dollar." Mr- Geer
added In tho aanio breath and without
n pause or clinnglng lite veice: "Hut
that Is what It wlU bo If wo go to free
coinage," leaving tho Impression that
The: Jouunal has said our standard
silver dollar underjTrco coinage, would
be a Mexican dollar. . . .
This was n trick unworthy of any
fair or Intelligent mutt, .uud more ho
since Mr. Geer refused in corrcot the
false Impression ho left on the crowd.
Tub Journal Im always been n Ite
publlcan paper. It has upheld the
Republican party when It stood truo
and square for American policies.
Wo have not a word to letract on
what wo have said In tint past for pro
tection or sound, iiiouoy. It was the
Minneapolis platform of 181)2 that said'
tho Republican party demanded both
gold and silver as standard money.
Now tho Republican party dcolarcs
that all Its utterances on bimet
allism In the past meant the single
gold standard. How uiu the people
to know but that Us present declara
tion for International bimetallism
will mean only the British gold
standard next time they niako a plat
form? Tho Republican state conven
tion that nominated Mr. Geer for
presidential elector voted down n res
olution declaring for the gold stand
ard, Mr". Geer Is neither fnlr, honest,
Just or consistent In his trcatmont of
Tiik Jouunal or of tho question of
bimetallism.
MEXICO AND JAPAN.
Tho Mexican dollar buys a bushel of
wheat lii'MoxIco. Tho gold standard
dollar buys 12 bushels In our country.
Which is tho bettor, fairer or Justor
measure of values?
Tho people of Mexico have tho sil
ver standard, because thoy produce
only about one million ot gold a year
and sixty millions of silver,
While jtho American people arc
struggling to get rid of tho gold
standard, tho peoplo of Mexico aro
eatlnlled and prosper under tho silver
standard. An ounce of sliver will buy
as much of tho prtxlucts of labor as It
over would.
Wo aro told that If wo adopt frco
coinage, wq shall bo reduced to tho
level of Japan. Japan Is not very
badly off, considering that It la a lit
tle Island kingdom. Its diet has Just
voted $45,000,000 for tho construction
ot railroads, telegraphs and cables,
05,000,000 for tho purclmso of.wur
material and ships, uud sltico January,
1805, 9000,000,000 has been Invested by
tho Japanese In banks, railroads and
other companies. Japan seems to be
getting along all right.
THE BARBERS' UNION.
It seems the Salem Harbcr's union
has not been able to enfotcc Sunday
closing and maliiUiln prices. On
Sunday barbershop wore nuaiu run
ning, and one or twothop.s are cutting
prices.
This Is to Iw regie! ted as the bar
bers as well as nil classes of laboring
men should not be compelled to work
on the Sabbath day IT It can be
avoided. Prices on no kind of labor
should be cut, and prices should bn
restored to labor as soon as business
will admit. The union should make
another HTort to enforce .Sunday clos
ing and standard prices In this city.
Thqy should not give up now. In
Germany, England nnd all European
countries barber's shave for one to
two cents. Wq want no such prices
In our country.
PHRENOLOGY AND POLITICS.
A picture Is printed showing the
size and shape of the heads of Candi
dates Hryau and McKlnlcy. A gentle
man In this city has analyzed the
phrenological features as follows, with'

The whole attitude of McKlnlcy ex
presses this Idea: Run by Murk

my convictions. Temporarily at tho
option of England. I have to ask
Mink Ilanua, when I can talk. I urn
getting restive. Uryan's attitude
says: For God, home and native land,
for tho constitution and America.
THE 8ALEM ODJECT LESSON.
A Salem Jeweler and vlco president
of a national bank has an object les
son In his show window to prove that
silver bullion Is worth but llltlo over
half Its coinage valuu In gold, while a
gold piece melted down is worth
nearly Its coinage value In gold.
A big crowd Is at that window all
day, and even on Sunday that dobate
goes on botween advocates of gold
standard and bimetallism. Tho ob
ject lesson Is making converts to frco
coinage right along, as It proves that
demonetization ot sliver has destroyed
nearly half tho value of silver and
everything elso but gold.
The bunetalllsts should thank Capt.
Martin for presenting such an effect
ive object lesson of the appreciation of
gold.
GOLD AND IMMIGRATION.
Horrow gold abroad to put all our
silver and paper money on a gold
basis. Glvo us the gold standard to
mortago all American Industries by
selling securities abroad, says Mark
Haulm's platform. Dig the gold and
sllvoroutof our own mines and coin
It up, Independent of the world, atthe
old American ratio, and pay our debts
with it, says Uryan's platform.
Let In all the foreign Immigration
that can read nnd write -their own
language) to compote with American
labor, says Mark Ilanuu's platform.
Tho only way to protect American la
bor Is to shut out foreign Immigra
tion, says Uryan's platform,

T, T. Geer: The rich have the
