that many a man who has heretofore
talked "silver" and many big news
piM?rs that -have advocated "silver"
were only doing so from motives of
policy or demagogy.
This campaign has smoked the
goldbug "nigger" out of the wood
pile. The sliver question has become
tho "llvo wire" of American politics,
of world politics, and the goldbug In
disguise takes his proper place.
The alleged "silver" papers of Cali
fornia have all been unmasked and
tho sales of Chronicles, Calls, etc.,
have fallen off to about 2.1 altogether
at Salem and 200 Examiners are taken
hero now.
MR. FORD AND SILVER
Tllmon Ford of Salem has always
been counted a silver man. In the
legislature ho tnado a record for frco
coinage. Ho has always said he was a
silver man. He now nddrcsscs audi

Hut now that the money question Is

Director of the Mint Preston has
Issued a circular In which he explains
the meaning of 10 to 1 as follews:
All standard silver dollars coined by
the mints or the United States since
the passage of the act of January 18,
1837, have been coined in the ratio of
1 to 15.081 generally called the ratio
oi i lo jo. Mill to reacu accurau! it-i
suits, the former and not tho latter
figure must be used in calculations,
the ratio Is obtained in this way: The
silver dollar contained 371.25 grains of
pure silver and the gold dollar 23 22,
grains of pure gold. If you divide
371.23 by 23.22 you will get the ratio,
or weight between a gold dollar and a
silver dollar that Is 15.0881. It Is,'

$1.2020, the reason Is this: A gold
dollar contains 23.22 grains of pure
gold In an ounce, or 480 grains of gold.
There arc us many dollars as 23.22 Is

divide 480 by 23.22 you got $20.07, the
number of dollars that can be coined
out of an ounce of pure gold. In other
words, the money, equivalent of an
ounce of gold, or of 15.0881 ounces of
silver, at the ratio of 1 to 15.0881.
Now, If 15.0884 ounces of sliver be
worth $20.07, one ounco is worth
$1.2020 as you can prove by simple
division. Tho same result Is ob
tained by dividing 480 grains, or one
ounce of silver, by 371.25, the number
or grains of pure silver In a standard
silver dollar at the ratio of 1 to
15.0884, which gives $1.2020.
Sixteen ounces or pure silver will
coin a little more than ono ounce or
gold; 15.0881 ounces or silver will coin
exactly the same amount or money as
ono ounce or gold; that Is $20.07. You
can prove this by dividing 15.0884
ounces by 371.25 grains, the operation
is as follews: 15.0881 multiplied by
180, divided by 371.25, equals $20,074.
It Is not truo thnt 1(1 ounces of silver
will come only $10.80 at the rate of 1
to 10.
As will bo scon above, ono ounco of
silver will coin $1.2020. Multiplying
$1.2020 by 10 gives $20.(13. You can
obtain tho entno results In another
way. Sixteen ounces Troy, or 7,080
grains divided by 371.25 gives the
number of silver dollars that can be
coined out of 10 ounces of silver.
7,080 divided by 371.25 equals $20.08.
