I Salem people arc closely Interested in tin-problem of Indian education, owing to the presence of the training school near by at Chemawa, nnd are always jrlad to know whether tho w uk Is advancing or not. A copy fell Int tho w filer's hand recently of one or the regular monthly letters written by ii pupil to his parent , which would Indicate a ravor.ible condition, and It Is submitted for what It Is werth: THE LKTTEII. "Dear Father I take great pleasure in writing you my usual monthly let ter stathg the condition of my health, progress, neatness, efficiency and Industry. My health lias boon very good, with tho exception of ft large boll which has made lis iinpcnrnnec on my In fei lor maxillary. My conduct has been bad. I got In Jail a few days ago for the first tlmo In nearly four years. Of course such things will happen at times. A fellow cannot always be what he would like to lv. Accidents will happen. My progress has been letter than It formerly was. Some of the employes say I know too much for my own good, but I continue to advance Into the depths of knowledge and wisdom. My neatness shows Itself In my letter writing, so It does not need to be de scribed. My oniclency monies next In order. I cannot say what 1 am competent to undertake at present, but I can tell you more about It In my next letter. I bavo ii trado now. Mr. Potter calls It gymnastic exercise, at the end of a long handled shovel, but I think the scientific iiitiuo for It Is "ditch dig ging." Wo arc digging a sower ditch for tho school, and wo recelvo CO cents Ior day as a recompense for our labor. Everything Is going on very nicely hero at the school. Wo still have Mr. Potter for our superintendent, and be manages things to the best of his abllllty." HURRAH FOR NORTHUPI That httlo political prostitute, tho Portland Telegram, alleged to be Dem ocratic Is whooping It up for sound money candidate Northup, who is running ngalnst thu regular Republi can nominee, Kills. All tho puke-caters In Oregon, who have no principles until the Oregon Ian has told them to have, must get down and worship Northup. What do wo en to for Republicanism unless It Is of our brand, and elects men wo can handle? That's tho only kind wo want. Republicanism ror tho peoplo bo d dl. WHY IT CIRCULATES. The Salem ministerial association two years ago got. up n bill to create theoulcoof moral director of chari table Institutions, or state chaplain ut tjnlem, at a salary of 1200 a year. Qmrinlaof the M. B. oliifreh u vn Minosl unanimously ii'juncti MaHon became they did nut vote for his bill. Jt was Introduced out of courtesy and "by request': through Hon. David Craig, who Is now censured by tho Democratic stump speakers In this county ror being the father of tho bill, when he was not, and tho calen ders show that he only acted by re quest, as the constitution Impliedly makes It the duty of a representative to Introduce a bill at the request or a constituent. It was the only bill re jected on second reading and was vir tually kicked out or the legislature. The house Journal on page 278 docs not show the true record or the vote on the bill a clerical error. It shows Boothby, Calvert, Curtis, Hlllegas and FIopo voting for rejection, and all others as voting against rejection. Exactly tho reverse Is tho true record, as nil voted to reject excopt Ave as above named. But then a house jour nal that cost only a thousand dollars to revise, can't bo expected to bo cor rect. But the Journal says It Wat? re jected. No Marlon representative voted for tho bill, as theso Hem emtio orators said at Gervals. Elder Barklcy Is en tirely Innocent in the matter. Mr. Grannls had his bill revived, Elder Barklcy out of courtesy moving to reconsider the bill, Barklcy had It amended so as to be at least a non sectarian measure, so a protcstant, Catholic, Jew or Gcntllo could be ap pointed. It was reported back In that form, but never wns considered. This light on Barklcy and Craig Is very unjust and we hope Mr. Grnnnls Is not taking part. The bill was to create a new cilice and never could have passed tho house. Brother Grannls may have meant well, but his bill was clearly unconstitutional and was so regarded by tho house. It provided for appoint ment to a state onlee of some one, "a minister of tho gospel In good stand ing In some evangelical denomina tion." It would bo uncharitable to say that Brother Grannls was lobbying for a bill to creato an otllco to bo tilled by himself, but It was so considered by uncharitable persons. It Is highly Inconsistent for the Democratic stump orators to attack David Craig and Elder Barklcy ror their record on this measure, as their record Is that they voted to reject tho bill on tho second reading, a most emphatic man ner or condemning n measure, and In which Messrs Barklcy, Craig, Moores and Ilofcr Joined, tho last namo being at tho time In tho chair of the house. STATE NEWS. McMlnnvillo has a labor exchange. Clatsop county warrants aro selling at 07 and 08 cents. A ttimplko road is to bo built from Eugene to Junction City. Harry Simons, lato cook on the San Jose, was drowned on May 5, His body was badly decomposed. Tho delinquent tax roll of Clatsop county will bo In the neighborhood or $2000. A remarkablo good showing. Tohu Ladd or Tho Dalles a row days ago saved tho life of an unknown youth who was trying to cross tho John Day river. The lad was In a boat and It was capsized. Owing to tho recent supremo court decision, Nellio M.Stovons, candidate ror county superintendent or Union county will withdraw and have a malo substitute nominated and act as his deputy. The petty Jobs of the olllcial class consume tho public taxes. Two men did a Httlo work. Chas. WT. Lyons probably hired his son or brother, S. II. Lyons two days with a team at $2 50 a day, and ho bossed the Job. Tho other 22 men who drew public money were "viewers," and ''chalnman," (a man who can hold down a chair), "clmlnmnn," and a treat many "survoyors." Tho $211.00 If actually put onto Intelligent scien tific road work, would build a nillo of good, durable road. But how could oftlclals live?
