CROWDED ROOMS
As Intimated In our report to you
one year ago, we found it necessary to
enlarge the nccomadations of the
schools and we liavo hud one addl-
Itonal room finished In tho Lincoln
building. By a rc-adjustmentof the
classes by the superintendent these
additions have been planned to be
sufllclent for the time being, und
probably will answer for the remain
der of the term, though the schools nrc
still In a very crowded condition,
some rooms having as many as 55 or
more pupllsenrolled.
The report shows that the district
Is carrying $58,400 insurance the
East building is Insured for 921,8000.
The question of providing for the
children In Highland subcrb Is re
ferred to the meeting tonight.
REMARKS.
The school census now being com
pleted will show an increaseover that
of last year: tho attendance at our
schools Is greater than It was last
year, and this too, without taking
into account the recent annexation of
Mornlngsldo addition to this district;
all of which indicates an Increasing
population and the necessity of a
gradual enlargement of our school
facilities.
The demands upon the resources of
the discrict during tho year have
been very heavy and your board have
constantly felt the necessity of keep
ing all expenditures down to the very
lowest limit. Possibly this course has,
In some individual Instance, subjected
us to criticism, but however this may
be, we have concluded the business of
the district with a view of securing
the greatest possible benefit for the
whole.
Ecspcctfully submitted, W.1I. Byrd,
chairman; II. A. Johnson, Jr., E., M.
Wnlte, Adam Ohmnrt, II. T. Bruce,
dlrcttors.

It Is gratifying to your directors to

tho financial condition of tho district
during tho year Just past In tho face
of tho prevailing depression and with
out a corresponding loss in tho etll
clciicy of tho school work. Wo are
Indebted, In part, for this gain to tho

more from tho state school fund and

tho further fuct that wo were en
nbled to cut down somewhat tho run.
nmg expenses of the district.
SALARIES.
By reference to our report of one
year ago you will see that salaries
wero considerably reduced during tho
previous year. During tho year Just
past wo have made still further reduc
tions by cutting down tho salary of the
superintendent from 9111.11 to 100 per
monwi; inaior tho principal or tho
East school from $80 to$75 per month;
of the principals of tho North, Park
und Lincoln schools from $75 to $70
per month each, ami or teachers who
heretofore had been paid $00 per
month to $55; so that touchers who
huvo taught In this district less than
ono year recolvo $10; from one to two
years $50 and two years or more $55
per month. Wo did not think It ad
visable to make further reductions for
the reason that wo believe it would
huvoimatcrlully Impaired tho eltlol-
enoy of the schools and this wo could
noi uo consistently with our dut v
directors.
