The RoMjburg Plalndcnler Is firmly
opposed to the legislature npproprlut-
lng a dollar to aid high schools. But
If the nnnronrlatlon bo made, every
normal school should k treated alike.
If Monmouth ami Weston bo aided
Drain and Ashland should get an

Is (situated. We object to aiding these
schools for tho reason that, practic
ally, the few are Iwnelltted at the ex
pense of tho many. That Is an Injus
tice, and no species of argument can
bo made to Justify It. If the thous
ands of dollars which have been reck
lessly squandered on tho Monmouth
and Weston normals, thc state uni
versity and tho agricultural college,
had been made to the Irreducible
school fund It would have benefitted
every boy and girl of school age In thc
state, in tho way of popular education;
whereas the money given thoso Insti
tutions has been for tho benefit mostly
of the sons and daughters of men who
arc abundantly nblo to educate them
themselves. Take up tho catalogue
of any of Uioho Institutions and ex
amine It and you will find not less
than GO per cent of the students arc
residents of the county In which tho
school Is situated.
And, further, you will not llnd more
than fi per cent nro residents of coun
ties rcmoto from tho school. And yet
overy taxpayer In tho stato pays an
equal per centum to aid those schools.
Still further, thoso who attend
tliosj schools from adlstaucoaronf
well-to-do parents who can alTord to
incur tho Incidental expenses of thonc
exc llcut schools which tho poorer and
less fortunate neighbors help support.
Wo claim stlllurther that tho state
has no constitutional right to aid a
boy or girl beyond that provided for
In tho public school. If anyouodcslrcs
n higher education, which Is commend
able In any young person, let him get
It at his own expense. Ho gets Its full
benolits, Lot him pay for It, mid not
tax his nelghlior to aid hliu.

dom, the competency or the Incompe
tency, of thc senator from Ohio, or of
his superior qualifications to sit inn
censor on the mental capacity of other

able act In our legislative history for

plicit, and unequivocal position which
this government assumed In regard to
the coinage and use of gold and silver

pealing tho purchasing clause of thc
Sherman Act Is composed of only
