more members of his own profession.
While Smith was a member from
Southern Oregon, he was Intensely
loyal to the Portland gang. He
sneezed whenever they took snuff,
absented himself when required,

the railroad committee did their bid

form liirasnio was wanted from his
committee he had to lie dragged up
from Portland by the hair of the
head and compelled to produce It by
force. He twice got away with the
Eastern Oregon portage railway bills,

last moment, so loyal was ho to tho
Portland corixiratlon gang.

the sweet thought that we were no
worse than others. I hope this will

had to bo recalled from him by the
house. He dodged voting on the rail
road commission repeal.

mann's seat In congress. They aro C.
II Moores, Tlhnon Ford, T. T. (leer
and Col. Hofer. Judge Ilcan, It Is
said, has declined to run. II. II. Mil
ler, of Grants Pass, Thomas Tongue,
oMIIIlsboro andOcerge Drowned, of
Oregon City, aro also In the race.
Linn county has no candidates, and
Albany will furnish neutral ground
upon which to make tho selection
when tho congressional convention Is
called.
Tho editor of Tins Jouhnat. must
be counted out of tho above list. Ho
Is not so modest as to say ho would
not take tho nomination, hut he does
not think It? Is In tho cards. There
are men in this district who have
served In the ranks of tho Republican
party for twenty or thirty years who
are entitled to more consideration.
Experience In legislation and acquaint
ance with tho needs of tho state should
count for something. And It will.
The McKlnlcy Itepubllcan Club or
Drownsvlllo, at a recent, meeting, by a
unanimous vote, resolved that "wo
pledge ourselves not to vote ror any
man who will not pledge hlmseir to
supiKirt every measure, consistent
with public weirare, to reduce taxa
tion." Tho club would do better to help
nominate men who do not go In to

machinery was In place, and It wos
expected to have everything In run
ning order, so that the. entire twenty
stamps will start upoii February Jld.
There Is about 10,000 tons of ore on
the dumps ready for use, but of course
some of this Is surface ore and will
not lw used at least for some time.
The mill will start on sonic average
ore from the Interlor.probably running
twenty-five dollars to the ton, perhaps
more, forty tons a day will be nboiit
the capacity of the mill. About fifty
men are at work.
While the decision leaves the con
stitutional question untouched the
effect will be that the state legisla
ture can order public buildings erected
wherovcr It pleases, nnd It will be
dlnicult to restrain the action. It will
mean in the future the location of
state buildings In different parts of
the state the same ns under other well
regulated state governments. Al
