The first Leap Year party of the
season was given Tuesday evening at
at Mr. Leo Brown's homo In Stayton,

Esther Robertson, who was home
from Salem. When 8 o'clocK rolled
around tho girls and their partners
appeared In 11 bunch, and all out of
breath. When asked for, an explana
tion promptly explained that those
"horrid boys" had kept the girls wait
ing "ever so long," until the boys had
accomplished a hundred unnecessary
performances essential to the mascu
line toilet.
A veiy entertaining program was
rendered, consisting of music and
recitations. Miss Olllc Robertson's
soprana solo, ' Because I Love You,
Dear," was given In clear, beautifully
rounded tones, full of feeling. Mr.
Hoy Wiles, of Newport, very success
fully entertained all by a number of
choice selections upon tho guitar.

That's nothing, Stayton is going to
have two and a new city hall.
The machinery for the new saw
mill Is all here and Saturday after
noon it was all put In motion on trial.
It made one think of old times before
that treacherous Arc visited our town
and came near destroying our little
city.
The Baptist will hold revival meet
ings here during tho following week.
A drama entitled "Out in the
Streets" was very successfully ren
dered at the Stayton opera house last
Saturday night for the benefit of tlie
new Methodist church.
School will close here Friday and
how lonesome It will seem not to hear
the old school bell again until autumn
rolls around.

directors of school district No. 24 was
held last night. Clerk Hozorth's

the present Indebtedness, will make a
total of $21,415.20. The expenditures
of the district for 1894 wu 8 $50,1(18.75
showing a decrease of .SIOJTA.'lOdue to
rigid economy.
The total amount of a.-wssible pro
perly of the district for 189") has not
yet been ascertained by the county
clerk.
At the election In March a new
director will Iw elected, vice Dr. W.
II. Byrd, whoso term will have ex
pired at that lime.
