Oh! for a touch of Monroe doctrine

Every paper In Oregon, except the
Orcgonlan-Tolognuii, Is opposed to a
special session of tho legislature.
The Eugene Dally Guard editors
don't own the Eugene Dally Register.
Wo make apology for our statement
of any such rumor.
Now tho Portland politicians want
"market-price blmctallsiu," what
ever that may be. Gentlemen, a ques
tion Is nover settled until It Is settled
right.
Tho Orcgonlan's poor opinion of
tho mombcrs of tho last legislature Is
backed up by tho three Oregonlan
printers who run tho Fendloton Trib
une. That settles It.
TURN ON
Half 'tlio truth has not yet been
told about the Portland gang who
deliberately blocked legislation In tho
sennte of the last lcglslnture. No bill
got through without a fight unless It
wno oniiift nrt, measure of the Rang.
All kinds of Important reform bills
from both house and senate were re
ferred to McGinn's committee on
"Revision of Laws" and there were
burled.
Legislation was purposely blocked
In the sennte, as will Ikj shown by
examination of the lllcs of nil the
newspapers In the state Including the
Oregonlan. Tho reasons were thnt a
maximum freight bill, an antl-free-nass
bill, a mortgage tax law, and
similar legislation for the people were
liable to pass that body. The house
had also passed a resolution calling
for the general appropriation bill to
bj brought in two weeks before nd
lournment. There was no way to
ensure the defeat of these measures
but u complete, but absolutely un
necessary block of legislation In tho
senate.
Resides the old machine gang were
afraid to hold a Joint session of the
legislature as required by law to fill
tho various olllccs llko railroad com
missioners, etc. All of the old gang
would have been knocked out. The
only way to savo their sinecures was
to block legislation mid they did It.

now of an extra session of the legisla
ture, and for myself I would lc In

would bo without any expense to tho
state whatever In any way, for tho
reason that they were all paid for
forty days, In which they could have
given tho taxpayers some relief In
those good Democratic times, had
thoy so desired. And the blame does
not rest on tho members of the house,
either, for they passed the bill abol
ishing the railroad commission and
cut down several appropriations. Also
passed a good tax bill with an exemp

they reached tho senate, the appro

A careful examination of tho Jour

will convince anyone which of those
two bodies kept Its pledges with the
