ing of two big battle ships authorized
by tho last Gougrett'.were opened At tho
navy department .today, A southern
ship building coneern underbid nil
competitors, aortu ajnd west, for build
ing these boats on plans drawn up by
navy departments.
The new boats ' will be of about
10,000 tons dleplaceiaeht.but will really
be larger than the Iowa, the largoat of
the battleships, now tinder construc
tion. Cramp k Sons, offered to con
struct one on the department's plan for
$2,820,000; two for (2,760,000 each. The
Union Iron Works, of 'Ban Franclsoo,
bid on tbo department's plans: Ono
ship, $2,740,000; for two ships, each,
f2,'000,OOO.
The Newport news ship building
and dry dock uompanv, of Virginia,
put In a straight bid of $2,860,000 for
one, and $2,260,000 eaob for two boats.
As tho law roqulres ono of the ships to
go to tho Pacific coast If price Is rea
souuble, thore is llttlo doubt but Union
Iron Works will roceiyo the contract
for ut least one ship.
