Mrs. and Miss Arnat, were driving
Into Salem they met with an accident
which came near proving fatal to Mrs.
Arnat. At tba intersection of Cburcb
and Court streets Ibe double-tree bolt
cams out, ettlng it down against the
bone ' t tela. The splrred team com
menced kicking and runnlug, turning
the corner abruptly, and tipping the
wagon oyer. The four occupants were
thrown ou, Mrs. Arnat striking on
ber bead, rendering ber unconscious.
Miss Atnai received a severe sprain to
one wrist, and Mra. Pattlnger waa'
painfully bruited. Tbe wagon bed fell
upon Mr. Pattlnger, pinning him to
the ground and bruising blm consider
ably.but fortunately bis injuries are not
serious. Mrs. Arnat, who is an elderly
lady, was tbe chief sufferer. She was
carried to tba rooms of Dr. Davidson,
attbe corner of High and Court streets,
where she was cared for. She remained
entirety unconscious for some time, and
afterwards was in a dared condition,
having suflered a slight concussion of
tbe brain. Her right arm, wrist and
flogers are also badly cut and bruised.
Tbe team ran only a short distance
before it was stopped.

Prof. Z. M. Parvln organized a sing,
ing school at the Polytechnic chapel
Monday evening. He will have from
24 to SO members and will make a suc
cess of tbe class, as be bas bad a long
experience in vocal training.

interesting talk on tbe lesson and
some points were brought out which

Thursday morning Rev. Elwood
Scott delivered bis fourth lecture on

Scott is master of bis subject, and bis
lectures are both Interesting aud In

This afternoon being the end of tbe
first half of tbe term, tbe school cele
brated tbe event with an appropriate
literary exercise conducted by Mica
Stroud, teacher of tbe primary grade.
Prof. Kraps and Prof. Nelson Morrison
delivered introductions in tbe program
which were excellent.
Tbe Highland Literary Society met
at 6:30 Friday evening. There waa a
good program rendered but tbe main
features of the exercise were the paper
conducted by MU Ruan and tbs de
bate on tbe question, "Resolved toat

David Grierson, aged about CO years.
Mr.Grterson bas been ill about a
month with lung fever, and be was
supposed to be recovering until yester
day afternoon, when be took a turn
for the worse and died at 10:30 Friday
night.
David Grierson was a well known
farmer and a good citizen. He was a
native of Scotland, with tbe genial
hospitable disposition of that people.
He came to tbe United States when a
young man and to Oregon over twenty
years ago, settling on a fine farm on
Mission b-Htnm, whete be built bim
self and family a beautlfal, prosperous
borne.
Hie wife, a sister of Richard Hens
ley, aud three children, the youngest
about 9 yeArs old, survive blm.

44 years.
Mr. Xortbcutt died at bis borne In
Capital Park at 4 a. m. this morning.
H came to Salem from Kansas about
six years ago, and bas engaged success

Mr. Nnrthcutt also leaves a wife to
mourn bis death. He waa a son of a
CbritLUn minister, and died full ol
faith In that belief. He was a membei
of tbe Masonic and United Workmen
