It has never been Intimated that her life was not happy. Nine years ago she was the most-talked about person in the country, tho presl- dent of (he United States hardly ex cepted. When It camo out that she was young woman, less than 23 years of nrje, tho daughter of a proud Virginia lamuy, brought up In a quiet, country place, there was universal amazement. It was the story of a young widow, Barbara Pomfre, and of her montal writhlngs between her love for a dead husband and her loye Tor a real live lover, of great enthusiasm. A few months after the appearance of tho book came tho announcement that Miss Rives was to marry John Armstrong Cbanler, on of the richest r.reat-grandchlldren of John Jacob Astor. And then It was discovered that tho hero of "The Quick or the Dead" bore a strong resemblance to young Mr. Chanler to quote from the pictur esque description of the book. s iietwecn the publication of "The Quick or tho Dead" and tho Witness of tho Sun." sho married. Mr. and Mrs. Chanler went abroad. He re turned to further a scheme for sondlng plotted American art students abroad for study. She did not come back un til last January. After a short stay In ew xoru'euo went to iier father's house where her husband Jolued hor. Then she travoled In search of health In the Far West. Mr. Chauler was In New York last summer and two mouths ago went to South Carolina, where ho had undertaken somo exten sive enterprises. Ho Is a man of great forco of character, a desplser of idleness, with noryes highly strung, and bent upoti accomplishing much In the world. The headquarters of specu lation of sliver la In London, but Its price, among other Influences has a distinct bearing upon the securities of several of our railroad systems, as well as those of the Mexican lines. The rise of silver, If continued, would effect the last mentioned properties In three nop- orato ways: First In gross earnings, as the pre dominate industry in Mexico Is mining sliver, which has been continued do splto the fall lu price and would ma terlally be stimulated by an Increase in its value. This would of course, wean an increaBO in the earnings of thu roads which travorse the mining districts. Second, tho roads would be benefitted by a reduction in their operating ex pences, about onethlrd of which are paid in gold. Third, a high prlco for silver increases tho capacity of the roads to meot their fixed charges which aro payable In gold. In tho United States tho Rooky mountain roads would be favorably aflectod by a further appreciation In tho prlco of the white metal, more par ticularly the people who are Interested rehabilitation of the Union Paolflo sys tem.
