Thoro Is a probablity that the project to conuect Baleui and Portland by an electric railway will be revived with tbo dawn of better times. The schema was well under way three years ago Just at tho time to be thwarted by tho financial crisis, F. N. Derby, superin tendent of the Balem Motor railway, and tho projector cf Mornlngsido ad dition, had been assured of capital by an Eastern tlrm to build and equip tho lino. There Is ample water-power for tho generation of electricity between tho two points, and Mr. Derby esti mates tbut $700,000 will put tho Hue iu operation, ills plan was to purchase a strip of land one-half mllo wide along tho roulo on each side and divide it into small tracts for salo. Tho route, us contemplated by tho projectors, was east of Oregon City. Mr. Derby thinks it not altogether impraotlcablo to go between tho river and blufl at tbut point without crossing tho formor. As an investment, Mr. Derby Is poslllvo that an electric lino connecting Balem uud Portland would pay, With 00,000 poople at one end of tho liue.and 15,009 ut tho other, to draw from, and the -ra--f will, .n iiludp-lj V ir. land, who have been visiting in eity for a few days, wont to Turner morning. l, , . ... , . Stipt. F. N.Derby Iiub udhored to tho iractlcttb lltv of this enterprise and it M one of the greatest opportunities for Investment and electrical development -ver ollered iu the United Btutcs. This wnuld bring fifty snuaro miles of highly productive laud Into dlrec .iourly electrical connection with the two largest oltloj In tlie Htato the capital and tho metropolis, Milk, fruit, vegetables, feed aud all country pro dulH would llud a nmrlut, wbllothe cities would havo a lurgely Increased t'ado in their merchandise While it would convert 32,000 acres of farming lands into suburban fruit tracts, It would build up a btrlng of villugos along tho entire line. It is Just what Is needed to convert this wealthiest part of Oregon from a thinly settled farming region, land lookod with poor roads for four to six months In tho yoar aud convert It into u thickly settled bolt of suburban homes and towns. This is an enterprise that cannot but succeed If the right men take hold of it. If Eastern capitalists could see the fruit and hop farms, the wealth of all crops as they show up at this season of tho yoar, aud could roallzo what hourly flrstclass railroad connections would do to colonize wholo villages of Eastern peoplo between Portland and Salem they would see a golden opportunity for Investment.
