iTuwiimmuiMu'Wiuwium Sewa .1 ilrv !t.r r i the cihtil jocbul '(DAU.Y Al WKKKLY.) BY HOPER BROTHBR8, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST :M, 185 SPECIAL HOP BEPOET. Prepared By Government Weather Service at Portland. Preparations are now being made by bopgrowera for tbe picking of their product, hence It was deemed that much timely information could be ob tained by having tbe correpondenta tn tbe hop producing district, make a pecial report on that product. Tl e main facta gleaned from these epecul renorta are eiven in tbis bulletin. Tl e bopa ot Oregon are principally grow n in tbe Willamette valley, In the coun ties of Marlon, Polk, Clackamas, Luce, Yamhill, Washington, Linn and Ben ten: a few are grown in Multuomtb county. Home few are grown in Doug laa and Josenhlne counties. In the eoolb, aud a few In Wasco and Ubton countieB, in tbe east. Tbe total prof' uct last year In Oregon waa "O.ttO bales. With the advance of the sea r, peculation aa to tbe maturity, quality andjrield of tbe bop, together witb ila probable dtfection by tbe hop lome, baa become general. Out of eevetal hundred special bop reports rectlvtd from as many persons interested In tbe present condition, and tbe future of the bop crop, not one has reported tbe bop lome a having entered the burr, though tbe invariable tenor of each report Is that the bop louse is numer ous In tbe yards. There Is a wide dif ference of opinion regarding the prob able yield, aa must necessarily folltw where tbe crop la grown over a vat territory as ia the case In Oregon. Flat tering reports come from each eectlon in which the bop is grown. In Wash ington county tbe outlook for yield is cheerful and tbe crop differs bo much that tbe date of commencement of picking ranges from August 25 to Sep tember 8. At Dlily, Washington county, one correspondent writes that the bops are ripening .ao rapidly that bop picking will likey commence about August 25, and tula is the earliest ap proximate date of commencement. In Washington county the lice are not so numerous as they were during the sea son of 1891. One correspondent states that hops are in a euperior condition, with very few lice, while the majority wish to empbasl7e tbe fact that they aro In good condition, and it is tbe general opinion that theylcld In Wash ington county will largely exceed that of 1804. Thero is, however, un excep tion coming from the correspondent at Sherwood, staling that a two thirds erop may be expected. Our correspondent from Aurora, Clackamas county, writes; "The burrs are rapidly forming and will have formed In a few days. Lice are num erous In every yard, but no one cau ell what damage they may do until picking time comes, which will bo about September 4. No grower iu tbe entire ButtevHIe district baa sprayed." Tbe correspondent of Aurora expresses Has his opinion that the yield In Ore gon for the present season will exceed tbatoflbeBeason of 1801 by about 10 per cent; this opinion is, counter. balanced by tbe crop correspondent at (Jerval. filarlou county, who Is of tba Impression that the crop will be about 10 per cent less than that of 1804. From a careful consideration of all the iutormrtion on the subject It ap pears that tho bop la moro extensively grown this year than tn previous yean. Notwithstanding the fact that many acres wero plowed down that boro last year, the crop will be larger In acerago since a large acreage of young hops which was unproductive lastyear are in full bearing this season. Hope appear to be making a good burr. Tbe coudltlon of Marlon county It explained Iu the followiug report received from tho correspoudeut at Hllvertoni "The hop crop In this ylolulty In fair, but not as good as last ym'n crop; llco aro Increasing rapidly, d tnoe-t of tbe groweru are apraylng, taittkttorophi far developed that ro MiIU are uucertaliif the acreage has In ofMami about 10 per out, which will tuake the hop crop about au average.. )n nilw portions of Marlon county the toue U not ho iiuiiiermm, am! uprayltut M Hot being done M general rule, t In Uiyrd not twin annO'Cd til opinion It that tbe bop loose fa on tb lucre!. Tbire is aa excellent pros pect for tbe bop crop in Polk comity, wbero there are extensive bop districts. In Polk county ry few bopa were plowed down; therefore tbe acreage has been increased. It is tbe opinion of eimeof tbe oldest growers in tbe county that tbe product wil ' exceed tbe yield of tbe previous seraon, and that tbe quality will be superior. Borne yards in that county have been left undisturbed. Tbe correspondent at Boena Vista states that the sprayed yards are comparatively iree from lice, la Linn and Benton coanllea tbe crop is up to tbe average, but in lane ciunty it is tboogbt tbe yield will fall below that of 1691. A superior crop is maturing in Donglaa county, where t ia lice are to few that in some sections nooe have been seen. In Jackson and Josephine counties a few bops are gr jwd and those few are superior and freesrom lice. Throughout tbe state wjeie tbe bop is grown there seems to b sLftl-rient moisture in the ground to mature tbe (crop and from a caretul ontlderatlon'of all information pro and con it is tbougbt tbe crop will be to excess of that of 1694. TAKE OAEE OP 1 BE FEUIT Allowing tbe fruit to He under tbe trees and rot is not only a loss but Ik detrimental to tbe bea!tb and thrift of tbe trees by increasing tbe germs of d-sease as well as affording a better op- pirtunity for tbe propagation of Insects tiat injure both trees and fruit. A good plan with fallen fruit is to go oyer tbe orchard and pick up tbe beat, or what can be utilized, and then turn iu tbe hogs and let them eat up all that is left. Then they can be tnrned out again until another supply drops. In Bending to maiket tbe better plan U to grade tbe fruit carefully and then sell each grade separately. It you at tempt to make tbe best fruit sell tbe poorer, a much less price is certain to be realized. A good fruit evaporator can be made a profitable investment. Nearly all kinds of small as well as tree fruits can bo evaporated, and If care 1b taken to do tbe work properly, the dried fruit is saleable at a fair price. In tbla way much fruit that would go to waste entirely or be fed to stock can be converted Into a marketable product, Iu some localities a portion of theipplea can be mide into ciffer for vinegar to a good advantage. Wltb tbe opportunity for marketing, evapor ating, using on tbe table, making Into cider or feeding to stock, non of tbe fruit should really be wasted. It stands for the farmer iu band to make every article of bis productions available In some way or other, and In pursuing such a course many dollars re Bayed that will assist him In making both endsof the year's expenses meet and will give him the satisfaction of having done his part completely and well.
