Although a small delegation of tbe
Baleni Y. M. C. A. participated In the
cntitefets at Oregon City yesterday with
the Portland team, the local team was
victorious lu thue of the live events

each team were regumted to take part
in each event. Wm. P. Bibcock won
tbe hammer throw, Charles Winters
tbe mile run and W. 6. Paige the nun
dred yard' dash, tbe latter also carry
ing oft the prize for tbe best all round
athlete. Watklns, of tbe Portland
team, won tbe pole vault aud bigb
jump. The afternoon program con
cluded with a match game of basket
ball In which the Salem boys were de
feated tbe ecore being 4 to 0 In favor of
the Portland team.
Tbe Balem boys returned on the
Salem local last evening much pleased
over the result of tbe day's contests.
There was an individual silver medal
for the winner of each event and a
prize for the one scoring tbe most
points.

Salem was well represented at Al
bany yesterday In the postponed Fourth
of July race.", a number of her best
riders being iu attendance and partici
pating in tbe yariuua events. Tbe
first event of tbe afternoon races was
oue third mile Class A. with four
starters, Bruce Burnett, of Corvallis;
Biddell, of Albany, Watt Siilpp and
Walter Day is, of Salem. Owing to
lime misuuderstaudiug the Albauy
man failed to start atd Bhlpp's tire
bunted leaving Burnett, of Corvallis,
aud Davis, of Salem, in the race. The
latter won in 40 2 6 Hecoud, beating
the time made by Clata B riders four
seconds in tbe same distance. The
Class B riders, Sears, of Albauy,and
L'e, of Salem, then run one third mile,
Bears wnnlng by a scratch in 60J sec
ond. Tbe mile raco for boys under 10
years oi age was easily won by E. E.
McClanahan, of Eugene, in 2:57. One
mile, CIufH A, with four starfern, bhiib
as first race, was won by bbipp, Divis

A was easily won by Bbipp. '
There was four staiters, viz: Collins
and Geo. Elklns, of Lebanon; Watt
Bhlpp and Arthur Tnwnsoud, of
Balem, Bhlpp took the lead at the

with Collins Elklns a good second.

Old Agricultural Work to Be
Converted Into Storage.
The building that has iu years past
-been known as the agricultural works,
aud more recently occupied by the
Churchill sasli aud door factory, will,
iu the very near future, become a pub
lic warehouse It Is now owned by tbo
Salem Water Comaqy, and Mr. Wal
lace has decided to put It into this use.
Master Mechanic Johnson, of tbe
Southern Pacific, was in the city today
and will at ?once put Into shape the
sidetrack leading to tbls building, and
put it into the best condition ior load
ing produce onto tbe cars. The build
ing Is 00x103 feet in elz, three stories
bigb, and bns two platform elevators
run by water power. It is ample In
size and could not well be better situ
ated for tbU purpose. A responsible
man will be placed, In charge of tbe
building and will receive bops as well
a? all kinds of produce ou storage, icsu
log receipts therefor, tbe same as mills
do for wheat. Only a minimum rate
will be charged for storage, and tbls
will give p rod u cars here an opportun
ity to command money ou warehouse
receipts. The building being brick,
will reduce insurance to a minimum,
and, ou tbe whole, tbls arrangement
must prove of great btneflt to tho
farmers about Balem.
