NOTES FROM THE EOAD.
One
of The Journal's 5000 Mile Men
Eeports.
Newberg, tbe second city In popula
tion In Yaojhlll county, la not tbe least
la ber push ana snap; ber merchants
are wide-awake up-to-date men. Last
year thle little city of 1100 people or
ganized tbe Yamhill Fruit Growers'
union. This year It la a branch of
tbe etate or "Oregon Fruit Un
ion." The objecta of thla union are
various. Co-operation In this line is
esnential: they have meetings and dtp.
cuss ways and means of planting, cul
tivating, spraying, etc. One of tin
main objects Is to get best market
prices. Mr. Dunbar last season shipped
hli prunes through tbe union and
r allze 7c per pound net. His aeij.h
b rs reallzeg from 4o to Co per pound.
We are glad to say that Marlon aud
Polk counties aro also organized. Ev
ery grower should consider It to his
Interest to Investigate the workings of
the "Oregon Fruit Union." The city
of Newberg should bo proud of tin
Pacific university. Bbe has 00 stu
dents this year. Tbey are athletic
young men anu will inuuigo in tue
latere Jlleglate games at tbe Btate
fair grounds on June 8. They
told us they had chartered the steamer
"Toltdo" and will come 160 strong,
headed by the Newburg band. Hur
rah for tho Pacific University. We
saw them playing tenuis aud( baseball,
and saw them doing tbe polo vault act.
Newberg is all right. We listed twenty
subscribers in a day and a half. We
found iu talking with them that quite
a number of the Newberg citizens urc
"boosters." Of course thla account?
(or much of their goaheadatlvenesy.
Yo editor of tho "Newberg Graphic" Is
a "Hoosler" from an adjoining county
in which tho writer was born, and be
was a prime mover in getting two
miles of fine pike road from tbe river
up to Newberg and on through the
city. When he first talked the matter
over to the people, a gentleman unac
quainted evidently, with gravel roads,
said a layer of gravel on this road
would sink out of sight before spring,
but unless our eyes deceive us there I
not a better piece of road In Yamhill
and It has been made for three yearn,
We will upeak In another article of the
road from Newberg to North Yamhill
and MoMlnuville.
