BY HOKER BROTHERS, .TUESDAY, &IAY 28, 1895. THE OLUJB CONVENTION. In Joatlcfl to Ibe people of thin eUte there are few thtnes that should be Bald about the state convention of Be publlctn clubs recently held at Port land. While It elected a few men rep resentative of the people of thin state as delegates to the iatlonal convention, It was In the main and as a whole an ofllce-bolder's and ofllce-seeker's con vention. There Is no particular odium to be attached to that, but on the other hand everyone knows that the politi cal club Is composed almost entirely of that element. The laborer and farmer have no time and have no money to spend on such luxuries as attending a convention for two or three days it this time of the year. It cost on in average ten or fifteen dollars to j.o there. The total attendance must have coat not less thin ten thousand dollars, and tne reception at tbo Multc por club where champagne punch was served free to all who would tike it must cost at least another thousand. TaennnKQf the Glee club that plowed the convention most was the one promising all "the biggest slice of pie" in 1890 when the party shall be re stored to power. Of course, Indirectly the people pay all these bills In the long run. The convention manages, bent every energy to prevent auy dis cussion of the vital political Issue the sliver question, or what Is even more vital to the people of this eUte, the abolition of Tammany methods in our state government. Tho Oregoulan talked about the necessity of unload ing mercenary oftlclallsm In our state administration last year for a few weeks before the Republican state con vention, but it was only a case of get ting Into the wagon before It was too late to ride, or It was dono to punish some man In public life whom it could not punish In any other way. 'The least the Republican club con vention could have done in decency to the people of this state would have been to denounce tho revenue and fin ance policy of the Cleveland admlnts- W& -- (ration and endorse the efforts of tho trtt6i Republican state administration at keeping the pledges of the state plat form of last June. For It is a fact that we .have some state officials who are taking the reform utterances of that platform seriously. They are putting the knlfo Into the padded bills, and bringing our state Institutions down In 'keeping with the capacity of tho people to pay.' Of course, the Oregoulan will not excuse the legislature nor the state officials for not electiug Dolpli, It would be willing all the boodle bills that could be drawn against tho state should be paid along with the 40 Do! pit lobbyists who were here as leg islative clerks at W to 110 a day, if ouly he could liave been made senator. Of eoune, the tendency of Mim ulub conventions Is not to serve or rvprmut the people, but the spolUeacn. They produce suck tueu a Thurston of So Mkx, and J5U of California, horn, thank Gfod, the people still have virtue Hough to repudiate Vhu they have a ' ' chance, Kxcept hi a few rare Instances, the couveutlon ww peeked by the polls )ae.
