Gold Reserve Threatened Prom a

THE JAPANESE WAR INDEMNITY,
Should Gold Bo Demanded Our
Supply Would Vanish.
New York, Mareh 21. Special tele
gram. A new menace to the financial
system of the United Btates has sud
denly come into being. Tho price of
silver advanced 11 cents an ounce, fol
lowing a similar advance in London,
due to the beginning of boarding here
and abroad In anticipation of Immense
(Inancial transactions when China be
gins to pay the war indemnity de
manded by Japan of f250,000,000 or
$300,000,000.
Will China have to pay lu silver or
in gold ? In whatever coin, the effect
upon the United States will be Imme
diate. If gold Is demanded it Is feared
that tho rate ot exchange in London
will suddenly shoot up, and the treas
ury will bo EUhject to a new and greater
drain than any in its history a drain
that Morgan and .Belmont will bo
powerless to stop.
Financiers with world-wide reputa
tions, such a the Rothschilds, ami the
great Berlin, London, and Paris bank
lag bouses, have already begun to fig
ure on the great profits ot haudling
such a loan to China. One courier,
Chester Hoi comb has already gone for
ward from this city. It is generally
understood that ho has gone as the
aeutof a London banking firm. In
Wall street it was aunuunced that
Charles B. Drummoud, the investment
agent of Baron Erlaugcr'ti banking
house in Germany, had beenlasked to
go to the East for bis principal.
Long-headed Jluanclers in Wull street

Japan comes to be paid, Japan may
propose to fit In the Chinese cublom
